Hair loss is a very sensitive issue. If the problem started for no apparent reason, you should first consult your GP and request a dermatologist for an examination. You can also have a private consultation with a hair loss specialist (trichologist).

The first step is to identify the obvious cause, often through blood tests. “There are many possible causes of hair loss,” says Annabelle Kingsley, trichologist at Philip Kingsley. “These include everything from hormonal changes and genetics to thyroid health, nutritional deficiencies, stress and scalp health.”
For women, the most common problems are female pattern baldness, thinning from the mid-parting, and telogen effluvium, which is excessive daily hair loss. “While 40 is young, it is also the age at which many women enter perimenopause, when estrogen levels become unpredictable and begin to decline,” says Kingsley. “Estrogen supports the scalp and helps keep hair in the growth phase, so fluctuations in this hormone can cause excess daily hair loss.”
So what can you do? Minoxidil (tablets or topical) can help female pattern hair loss. “Hormonal hair loss often resolves on its own, but topical drops can help minimize hair loss,” says Kingsley. Dermatologists may prescribe spironolactone, which can help with hair growth, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Choose a course of action and try it out for a few months. However, be sure to take before and after photos so you can see what caused the difference.
