Creator Carolina Contreras, aka Miss Rizos, started a movement to educate and raise awareness of Afro curly hair in Latin America and the Caribbean. That sparked demand within the community, and in 2014 they opened their first salon in the Dominican Republic. The popularity of the salon led to the opening of a second salon in New York. This salon is great at offering the basics of curl hair care (i.e. wash and go, finger coils and trims), but stylists also recommend best practices for clients to keep their curls looking and healthy. The extra time we take to educate our clients is what truly makes this salon a salon. It’s a great place to visit.
I started my curly hair journey in 2015, but it wasn’t until 2021 that I entered my first curly hair salon. For the first time at Miss Rizos Salon, I was able to meet a stylist who specializes in my hair type and texture. This experience was very eye-opening as my stylist explained every step to me. And it was a great bonus that most of the products used were BIPOC-owned. Overall, this service was very helpful. Moreover, the result was 10/10. I have never seen my hair look so healthy!
