A Maryland company helps women struggling with hair loss by bringing dermatologists and hair stylists under one roof.
Kindred Hair & Skin Center in Marriottsville helps patients suffering from alopecia, specifically central efferent cicatricial alopecia. This alopecia is a condition that primarily affects black women and causes permanent hair loss on the top of the head.
According to the National Library of Medicine, genetics, hot combs, hair relaxers, and scalp infections can cause CCCA.
CCCA Kindred customer Cheryln White didn’t realize her symptoms until she met Dr. Chesahna Kindred, a board-certified dermatologist.
“She noticed right away that my scalp was inflamed,” White said.
This company educates patients on how to treat hair loss. Dermatologists and stylists work together to diagnose the disease and begin treatment.
“They see a gap between what stylists know and what I do medically… There’s a hole in between, but by having patients see both at the same time, they can actually can fill that void,” Kindred said.
Although Kindred only treats patients, it also holds workshops where dermatologists train stylists on what to look for and do until a patient receives the right treatment for their condition.
White’s hair slowly began to grow back, thanks to prescription drugs, platelet-rich plasma treatments and steroid injections.
