A complete guide to creating bangs with curly hair

Bangs never go out of style, but curly bangs are less common. The popularity of bangs has waxed and waned over the years, but the undeniable truth remains that a great set of bangs can transform any hair texture, including curls. Here, hairstylists share tips for styling curly bangs and how to maintain them.

Who should get bangs?

Anyone can create bangs, and people with all hair types, whether short or long, curly or thin, can create bangs. The difference depends on how you cut or style your bangs to suit your face shape, hairstyle, and texture.

“Bangs are one of the easiest ways to change your look,” says Teresa Johnson of Twisted Hair Salon. She says fringe is the perfect choice because “people want to look different but still want to maintain length.” Johnson is used to requests for soft, wispy styles, strong, heavy bangs, and long curtain fringe.

One of the most popular requests at Johnson’s salon is curtain bangs, which, as the name suggests, frame each side of the face like a curtain. Johnson recommends this style for people with short foreheads because it can create the illusion of a larger forehead.

According to hairstylist Lindsay de los Santos, curly curtain bangs like the one pictured below “open your face up and show off your facial features and bone structure.” De los Santos added that this style emphasizes the cheekbones.

On the other hand, Johnson suggests that people with larger foreheads consider placing bangs either just above the forehead or near the center of the forehead. This can make your forehead appear smaller.

In rare cases, you might not like curly bangs, but luckily they are easy to hide. “When you have straight hair, it’s not easy to hide it,” explains Johnson. “Curls are easy to manipulate, meaning you can pin them together, twist them into different curls, or wear them as side bangs.”

baby shag

A modern take on the classic shag haircut, this haircut is a more modern take on a retro style. It includes plenty of choppy layers for texture and is complemented by fringe bangs that land on your eyebrows for an effortlessly cool vibe.

modern mullet

If you’re looking for a standout look, this modern mullet is for you. An update on the classic mallet, this style has a top and back of approximately the same length, making it more versatile. Notice the short bangs. This is a smart option to make your forehead look smaller, as discussed earlier.

face framing layer

If you want your hair to have more movement, consider face-framing layers or curtain bangs. Take inspiration from this style with curly bangs that are short in the middle and longest along the outside of your face so you can easily pull them back when needed.

bangs with cuts

Enhance your wavy shag hairstyle with chopped bangs to emphasize the texture and dimension of your hair. This haircut gives much more volume compared to styles without layers. If you’re new to curly bangs, this might be a good starting point to slowly get used to the look.

Curly bang considerations

People with curly hair should consider a few things when adding bangs to their style. From the style of cut to how to cut curly hair, be sure to find a stylist who is experienced in cutting and treating curly hair.

ask for a dry cut

Most stylists use the dry cutting method to cut their clients’ curly hair. A dry cut means that the hair is cut while it is dry (usually before the stylist has washed it). This avoids the common frizz problem with curly hair that can make your hair look shorter after drying. If you cut your hair wet, your stylist won’t be able to gauge exactly how much to cut, and you may end up with bangs that are much shorter than you intended.

Try a shag cut

To ease the transition from no bangs to curly hair, try starting with a shag haircut. The layered effect of shag styles, especially longer shags, works well with curly bangs and is a great starting point when adding bangs to your look. Once you’re happy with the look, you can always ask your stylist to shorten your bangs to create the perfect bang length for you.

trim regularly

Trimming your curly bangs regularly (every 4-6 weeks) will help keep them looking their best. Trimming avoids dead ends and allows your curls to bounce naturally. Additionally, your bangs won’t be too long, making it easier to style.

maintain curly bangs

Keeping your bangs in tip-top shape doesn’t have to be complicated. In addition to regular trims, follow these tips for maintaining and styling curly bangs.

Wash curly bangs more often. It is generally recommended to wash curly hair no more than once a week, but bangs should be washed more frequently. Depending on your product usage and preferred style, you can wash and reset your bangs every day or every few days. For best results, be sure to use a shampoo and conditioner designed for curly hair. Style curly bangs while wet. It is best to apply the product and style when the bangs are wet. When styling curly bangs on days when you don’t wash your hair, try applying water first before adding curl-defining creams or other curl-styling products. Try using a curling wand when styling. Curls may need a little help. If your curly bangs don’t hold together well, you can use a curling wand to add more definition. Choose a wand with a similar width to your natural curl pattern.
