The top hairstylists we spoke to predict that shorter lengths are here to stay as the weather gets colder, so naturally we’re left mining the ’90s archives for inspiration. Sho. On the other hand, if you’ve been brushing your bangs out of your face for summer, fall is the perfect time to loosen them up and style them. And our hair (just like our outfits) could benefit from some serious layering.

Cutting your hair short for fall may seem counterintuitive when you’re looking to cover up in a cozy knit. But it actually makes a lot of sense to grow your hair out now before you grow it out in time for next summer (giving you more options to tie your hair back when it’s hot).
What’s more, this trend is full of nostalgia, with 90s-inspired short hairstyles being popular this season. “We definitely expect hair to be shorter in the fall of 2024,” said Dom Seeley, celebrity hairstylist and ColorWow International Creative Director. If you’re not sure whether to go for a bob or short hair, split the difference. Seeley says the “crob,” or cropped bob, is a popular style.

“Think close-cropped hair, not as short as a pixie, but shorter than a bob, like Natalie Imbruglia’s ’90s hair,” he says. “Or a short, textured bob with wispy length and movement throughout,” he added. This decade has given us plenty of midi and long-hair inspiration these days, but “for short-haired girls who don’t want to brave the pixie just yet, there’s going to be more of this ’90s crop.” predicts Seeley.
