MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (WJRT) – According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 1 in 4 Americans suffer from some degree of hair loss.
August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month, a time to recognize and educate people about the causes and resources for hair loss in men and women.
Whether it’s due to illness, genetics, age, medication, or even stress, hair loss can be traumatic, and many people are looking for a solution.
ABC12 met with local women who have come from very different walks of life when it comes to hair removal.
Sherry Nim is a cosmetologist and hair loss education advocate at Scott Harris Salon in Mount Pleasant.
She works to help clients find solutions for hair loss and regaining their confidence.
We recently introduced CombLine hair extension technology that can add volume to areas with less hair.
She herself lost her hair after giving birth, so she has extensions that frame her face.
She says unless you experience hair loss yourself, it’s hard to understand the impact it has.
“When I got on the elevator and saw that my head was getting thinner and rounder, I knew I had to do something about it. That’s why I have bangs all over my hair. You can style it just by putting them in. “You don’t know how much it will affect your daily life until you experience it,” Nim said.
Nim says each individual’s situation is different and may require different solutions.
She added that it’s important to talk to your health care provider to understand the cause.
We also met Jamie Huber and Bessie Martinez. Both have completely different hair removal experiences.
Jamie was hit by a truck and suffered severe head trauma.
After that, spots appeared all over her scalp, and her hair stopped growing, leaving her naked.
Bessie became ill and developed sepsis.
Along with the medication, she says, it caused major damage to her hair.
We’ve both tried a variety of solutions, from shampoos to vitamins.
The two are currently having hair extensions from the same hairdresser to add volume and cover their bare areas.
They say it’s hard to understand the cost unless you experience it.
“This has brought me to tears many times. We don’t talk about it because it has a huge impact on confidence and self-esteem, and there’s a lot of stigma, especially for women.” Mr. Huber said.
“It’s obviously uncomfortable to go somewhere without hair,” Martinez said.
Both encourage those struggling with hair loss to seek out resources.
