To grow or not to grow — that’s the question on everyone’s mind as social media influencers rave about the hair-transforming magic of rosemary oil. Is it really the miracle cure they’re hyping up? Is it really like collagen for hair? With all this love being poured out, it’s no wonder the rosemary oil market is expected to skyrocket to a staggering $23.59 billion Canadian ($17.53 billion US) by 2030. Rosemary oil is packed with natural benefits without the high price tag. For just $15 (more on that later), you can give your haircare routine the makeover it needs. Are you ready to find out if the rumors are true? Your hair (and scalp) will thank you.
Is rosemary oil good for hair?
Caroline Ruggiero, an International Academy of Trichology (IAT) certified trichologist, tells Yahoo Canada that rosemary oil just might be your new best friend thanks to its ability to promote “microcirculation and vasodilation,” which are linked to hair growth. “Rosemary has antifungal and stimulating properties. Often, it’s used in combination with other oils and ingredients to help with scalp issues,” she says.
In cases of natural hair thinning, rosemary oil has shown positive results. But in cases of certain conditions, such as autoimmune male pattern baldness, “essential oils cannot regrow hair,” says Ruggiero, CEO of Truly You Hair and Scalp Clinic. She adds, “Most hair loss treatments are like aging treatments, there is no cure. But just because there is no cure doesn’t mean there is no care.”
Does rosemary oil help hair grow or thicken hair?
A 2023 study on mice demonstrated that rosemary can promote hair growth. What’s more, Ruggiero recommends combining rosemary oil with other essential oils to enhance its effects: “Bay Saint Thomas (Pimenta racemosa) and grapefruit oil are ideal” for strengthening hair, and “rosewood and geranium oils are ideal” for revitalizing the scalp, she says.
To improve scalp health and reduce dandruff, Ruggiero recommends mixing rosemary oil with palmarosa, cade, and laurel oil. “To boost the effectiveness of your shampoo, try adding eight drops of rosemary oil, six drops of juniper, three drops of chamomile, and eight drops of lavender. This blend will help treat dandruff,” she says.
Is rosemary oil safe to use on your beard?
Rosemary oil is safe to use on your beard because it has antibacterial, antifungal, and redness properties. “These properties could potentially benefit your beard care,” Ruggiero adds. While rosemary essential oil is generally non-irritating, she stresses that it should always be diluted and used for short periods of time, especially if you have sensitive or damaged skin.
“It can be toxic if taken internally in large amounts,” she warns. Ruggiero also says that people with epilepsy should avoid rosemary oil. “Rosemary contains camphor, which can cause seizures,” she explains.
