I’m really sorry for writing about Living Proof again. It looks as if I’m falling deep into its bosom, but I swear on my life that I’m not. I am someone who has experienced some degree of hair loss in recent years. I am experiencing actual hair loss, not thinning hair. I experienced alopecia several times when I was a teenager, and I think you are susceptible to it too. This time I didn’t have any alopecia, but my hair was thinning enough to cause concern. The problem is, when your hair feels a little sparse, you’re tempted to comb it up and tie it up, which ends up pulling your hair out, which is also not a good idea. All I can say is thank you for the Color Wow Volume Spray I wrote about the other week and for the extensions done by Charlie at Gielly Green in London. (No, they don’t make the situation worse. At least not. She’s a genius.)

I know men who have had success with prescription treatments for hair loss, but women have fewer options. But I think I’ve found the next best thing. I was sent a little secret bottle of Living Proof Scalp Care Density Serum (£54, spacenk.co.uk) last year. I rate this brand very highly, but I’m a lazy person so I started out with the best of intentions, but nothing happened and I lost interest after a few weeks. However, this spring, we started to break up more and more, so I thought I’d give it another try.
This does not guarantee new hair growth, only increased “density” and decreased thinning. For years nothing happened (again). No, that’s not true. The serum contains an “anti-gray complex,” which I completely missed in my rush to grow hair. I kept looking at my roots and thinking, “How strange, I must have needed a fix a long time ago.” It was only while reading the bottle that I realized that my lack of gray hair was not a miracle, but the result of daily use of the serum. So that bit definitely works.
To be honest, at this point I didn’t think anything was going to happen, but I persisted and continued to use the dropper dutifully on my parting and on the sides of my temples. And 10 days ago, it paid off. It’s almost 5 months old. New hair! It’s small, but it’s new hair. When I tied my hair back, which I shouldn’t do, the side parts looked less weedy than before, and the parting became narrower.
Right now, I’m trying not to make wild claims. Maybe my hair decided to grow back on its own. Perhaps it was at a certain point in its growth cycle. It probably gains momentum in the spring and begins to bud in late summer. I also used Weleda’s rosemary hair tonic, so that may have been a factor as well. who knows? All I can say is that my parting has definitely gotten narrower again and that my hair has started growing on the side of my forehead. There is also less hair falling into the plug hole when washing. I don’t want to exaggerate my success, I didn’t grow a rich thatch, but hair loss is very painful. If you are in a similar situation to me, I recommend you to try this product. It’s been a good 6 months. I’d like to quickly add that other people who have used this have found their scalps to be unbearably itchy, but that hasn’t happened to me.
You may also want to try supplements. Viviscal is the best known. It’s worked for me in the past (as with all things hair-related, eventually you have to be patient), but I haven’t been taking it lately. The moral of this story, it seems to me, is that whatever treatment you choose, you need to take it seriously, rather than just casually using it on and off. One last thing: I’ve heard very good things about a brand called Harklinikken, but I haven’t personally tried it yet.

Ursula Parrott’s Read Ex-Wife (Farber £9.99) was first published to scandalous acclaim in 1929 and remains totally fresh and relatable today. This is a story about a woman in her 20s who is in the midst of a divorce despite a modern open marriage, at a time when divorce was seen as a personal failure. She roams New York untethered, longing for both the past and the future, as she is free to go on vendors and have meaningless sex. I loved this novel. It’s dark, funny, and packs a serious punch. timesbookshop.jp
