Let’s be realistic for a second. No one does more when it comes to Black hair than we do! Our crown? It’s sacred, powerful, and big business! Some of our favorite Black-owned hair care brands have cashed in on the big deals, but don’t get us wrong, they’re still running the show behind the scenes, making sure we’re here thriving, one curl or coil at a time. Let’s break down some of the brands that have passed on the baton but are still at the helm.
1. Shea Moisture
The undefeated OG. SheaMoisture signed a big-money deal with Unilever in 2017, but founder Richelieu Dennis isn’t just resting on his laurels. He remains involved with the company, working to ensure it honors its roots and serves the needs of the community where it was built.

2. Carol’s Daughter
When L’Oreal acquired Carol’s Daughter in 2014, Lisa Price didn’t just walk away – she stayed on as a leader and continued to ensure their products were suited to textured hair – and let’s be honest, we’re still running around trying to get our hands on their Hair Milk!

3. Miel Organic
Monique Rodriguez made headlines when P&G came on board, but she’s still at the helm. Her strong leadership and passion for growth has proven she’s here for the long haul, ensuring Miel remains the go-to for naturalists around the world.

4. Mane Selection
Courtney Adeleye started a movement and continues to push its story forward even after her company was sold to MAV Beauty, because being a boss isn’t about stepping back, it’s about leveling up.

So let’s cheer on these Black-owned brands that have leveled up without losing their soul. These brands have been sold, but the pulse of Black hair care still beats in every product. These queens are still here, proving that when it comes to our hair, it’s always more about business and tradition.
