While beauty brand diversity has improved significantly over the past few years, there is still work to be done to ensure accurate and fair representation of BIPOC-owned businesses, both small and large. While companies often limit the promotion and celebration of these brands to their respective heritage months, everyone should be finding out and hearing about these successful and hardworking brands throughout the year. Now that it’s National Latino Heritage Month, TZR is here to help you expand your product lineup in the hair department. There are numerous Latino hair care brands that represent different hair types and multifaceted cultural practices that their founders graciously share with consumers.

For example, Bomba Curls is a curly hair-specific collection that uses traditional Dominican beauty techniques to strengthen and protect coils. These products would be a great addition to a natural-haired woman’s wash-day routine. Drugstore staple It’s a 10 sells Miracle Leave-in, which works for all hair types and provides lasting moisture and improved hair health. Plus, Nopalera uses botanicals native to Mexico for powerful formulas tailored to certain common hair concerns. Bottom line, there are a ton of diverse and effective brands you can shop, but it’s all about making the effort to dig deep.

To get you started, TZR has compiled a list of established and emerging Latino haircare brands that are worthy of your attention and support, now and into the future.

Rizos Curl

Founded in 2017 by Julissa Prado, Rizos Curls boasts a collection of hair products for all curl types, using a blend of natural ingredients like nourishing aloe vera, argan oil, and coconut oil. The brand’s sole mission is to ensure curly hair is bouncy, defined, voluminous, and above all, healthy. The Rizos Curls site also has a curl education tab for those who want to learn more about health and maintenance.

When it comes to product choices, their Deep Conditioner has received tons of glowing reviews. Infused with sunflower oil, shea butter, and olive oil, the formula provides extra vitality and moisture while promoting hair growth and strength. Plus, reviewers rave about their Apple Cider Vinegar Scalp & Hair Rinse for its powerful detoxifying and buildup-removing properties. There’s a reason this brand is so popular; you can shop a wide selection online, at Target, or Ulta.

Bombacurl

Bomba Curl, a cruelty-free Afro-Latina curly hair line, uses traditional Dominican beauty secrets to keep hair full and long. Founder Lulu Cordero, an Afro-Dominican woman, launched the brand after suffering from severe traction alopecia and realizing that a unique hair care recipe could help solve her hair growth and overall health issues. Now, you’ll find that the brand’s small but mighty collection focuses on ingredients that penetrate deep into your hair to nourish and strengthen it.

One of their most popular products, the Forbidden Hair Mask, promises to restore elasticity, moisture, and shine to your hair. And reviews on the site back up the formula’s effectiveness. Plus, the coordinating Forbidden Hair Oil blends ingredients like rosemary extract, coffee seed oil, and castor oil to strengthen hair follicles and eliminate dryness in the hair and scalp. You can find these products on the company’s website or at Thirteen Lune.

It’s the A10

You’ve probably heard of the cult-favorite hair care product “It’s a 10,” but did you know it’s Latina-owned? Frustrated with products that offered one benefit but little in the way of results, hairstylist and salon owner Carolyn Aronson created her best-known product, Miracle Leave-In, in 2006.

This popular formula eliminates frizz, softens hair, tangles, and restores shine to your hair, so it’s no wonder the brand has become so popular. Today, the brand is a force in the beauty industry, offering a host of other popular products, including It’s a 10 Silk Express Miracle Silk Daily Conditioner. Made with natural silk, this conditioner leaves hair feeling super smooth and protects it from environmental and heat damage. You can find the brand at Ulta, Sally Beauty, and on their website.

Ceremonia

Rooted in Latino tradition, Ceremonia is a clean haircare brand that focuses on not only making hair look beautiful, but also on hair health from root to tip. With a variety of food-inspired products, the brand helps consumers develop a hair routine from their collection that is sustainable and made with natural ingredients. The website also features a hair quiz to help develop a routine.

Founder Baba Rivera, who grew up in Sweden, wanted to incorporate her Chilean Latino roots into the line to bridge the gap in Latino representation while also sharing her own beauty routine. One of their best-sellers, Guava Protect & Repair Shampoo, uses guava and aloe vera to repair color damage and protect color-treated hair. Plus, TZR Beauty Award-winning Papaya Scalp Scrub acts as a scalp detox, gently removing buildup. These products and more are available for purchase on their website, at Sephora, and at Revolve.

Noparella

Tired of having to comply with tedious TSA liquid baggage rules? Mexican-owned brand Nopalera can solve your problem with their solid shampoo and conditioner bars. Founded by Sandra Velazquez and drawing on Mexican beauty traditions, Nopalera’s products are enriched with a mixture of Mexican nopal cactus and natural butters, which provide superior cleaning that also moisturizes. The brand’s most popular product? A shampoo bar recommended for oily hair, Balance + Repair creates a fantastic lather that soothes the scalp and leaves oily hair cleaner and stronger.

At the same time, the matching conditioner bar, Balance + Repair, repairs and strengthens without adding too many oils. Keep these in your toiletry bag and you won’t have to worry when going through security. You can buy these airport-approved products at Nopalera, Amazon, Credo Beauty, and Thirteen Lune.

Lola in Rio

Lola from Rio, a Brazilian vegan haircare brand, creates products that actually work while focusing on sustainability and environmental impact. The line consists of different collections that target different hair concerns and types, such as Morte Súbita for damaged hair, Meu Cacho Minha Vida for curly hair, and Rapunzel for the growing phase, so this brand caters to everyone’s needs. One of their most popular products, the Argan Oil Mask, contains a repair formula that ensures hair fiber regeneration. By replenishing amino acids and packing damaged areas of the cuticle, hair is repaired and protected.

Plus, Be(m)dita Ghee Hydrating Banana Butter is a powerful combination of vegetable butters and coconut water that revitalizes dry, lackluster hair. For those looking to develop a hair system with one line, the brand’s website is the first place to check out.

Rezo Hair Care

Founded in 2018 by New York-based hairstylist and curl specialist Nubia Rëzo, the Rëzo brand is home to not only RëzoCut, a technology made specifically for curly hair, but also an incredible line of products. Created to give hair more definition, volume, and improve healthy coils, the plant-based formula works hard to revive and maintain any curl type. Part of the newly expanded Curl Manifest line, black tea-infused Curl Manifest Gel adds much-needed volume and provides heat protection from blowdryers and diffusers.

Plus, the conditioner from the same collection is an ultra-hydrating pre-styling step that locks in much-needed moisture. You can shop the products on the brand’s website, or visit one of their salons in New York City and New Jersey to try out the products (and get a cut) with Rëzo’s pros.
