The bob has been a major hair trend for a while now, with variants like the lob and French bob gaining in popularity. With all the buzz about the bob, one trend we didn’t expect was the asymmetrical bob. If you want to try an edgy inverted bob style, here’s everything you need to know before you make the cut.

What is an asymmetrical bob?
Asymmetrical bobs, inverted bobs, angled bobs, and graduated bobs all belong to the same family: funky uneven chops. Simply put, it’s “a short hairstyle where one side is longer than the other,” says celebrity hairstylist and Nexxus ambassador Kathleen Reilly. Professional colorist and hairstylist Marie Nino calls it a bold, modern cut with sharp, uneven lengths.
“This style offers an edgy twist and can be tailored to suit a variety of face shapes and hair types, allowing you to stand out and create a look that’s uniquely yours,” says Nino. “The asymmetry adds movement and interest, making it a fresh, unique take on the classic bob.”
How to cut an asymmetrical bob
Now, we’re not suggesting you try to create an asymmetrical bob on your own – this is definitely a style best left to the professionals – but it’s good to get an expert’s opinion on how this look can be achieved, and the approach may vary from stylist to stylist.
“I like an understated asymmetrical bob, but can also be more dramatic,” says Riley. She tends to cut the back the same length and one side the same length as the back. “I let the other side sweep back so that when it hangs down in front it’s longer than the other,” she says.
“Start by creating a part and cutting the shorter end. Holding the hair at a 45-degree angle creates a dramatic slope that tapers towards the back. For the longer end, pull the hair back slightly as you cut, preserving the length, to create a forward angle towards the face,” says Nino. Next, “Lift the hair at a 180-degree angle to add texture and movement, and add layers while ensuring the length transition is smooth and balanced.”
How to Style an Asymmetrical Bob
There are lots of ways to style an asymmetrical bob; it all depends on the look you want. Riley likes to start by applying Nexus Prep & Protect Heat Defense Spray ($16) for shine and heat protection, then blow-dry her hair. For a sleek, polished look, Nino recommends using a straightening iron like the GHD Platinum + Styler ($279) to smooth out the hair. Riley gives it a firm flat iron to “accentuate the asymmetry,” then uses Nexus Comb Through Flexible Hold Hairspray ($16) to keep it in place.
For a messier, more voluminous style, Nino recommends adding a texturizing spray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($52) or IGK Beach Club Texturizing Spray ($34). “For wavy or curly hair, you can apply a curling cream or mousse and let it air dry or diffuse to create texture,” Nino says. Pro tip: “A side part will accentuate the asymmetry, while a center part will add a more modern touch.”
