The Olympics is an inspiring sporting event that motivates people all over the world to play sports, get healthy and work hard. In addition to that, the interest in makeup, nail art and braids has brought new trends to the fashion world this year. Athletes’ hairstyles have certainly gained in appeal, especially braids, with the humble braids being styled in amazing ways, such as box braids, high ponytail braids, knot braids, pigtail braids and cornrows.
Braids are hair strands that are tied together and crossed to create patterns. Braids originated in Africa about 5000 years ago. The style of braid identified tribe, marital status, age, wealth and power.
In India too, women have been braiding their hair for centuries. From toddlers to Bollywood actresses, they wear braids for various occasions. Recently, different kinds of braids were seen at the Ambani family weddings and pre-wedding functions. Bride Radhika Merchant had long braids covered with gold accessories at one ceremony. Isha Ambani too had hip-length braided hairstyle adorned with gajras and jewels. Celebrities who attended the wedding, Khloe Kardashian, flaunted low French braids adorned with diamond brooches. Kim Kardashian wore long tight braids with her Indian outfit.
Confident and stylish athlete
Hairstyle can either enhance or hinder your performance. Table tennis player Reece Richa Tennyson (who became the first Indian woman to win a professional tour singles title at the Ecuador Open in 2021) said, “Many players have their hair perfectly styled, which shows they are the strongest in the field. Styling is a sign of confidence. Many contestants style their hair with ribbons in colours similar to the national flag to show national pride. Staying focused during the tournament and following dress code rules are key to success. Athletes also need to make sure their hair doesn’t get in the way while they play. Staying comfortable and focused can make a big difference in their performance.”
Braids that grab attention
Athletes have emerged as influential fashion icons in recent years, shaping trends and partnering with brands. Hairstyles certainly became a talking point at the Paris Olympics. Savio John Pereira, a hairstylist who has four salons in Mumbai and has been the official partner of Femina Miss India Makeover for the past seven years, says, “Braids have always been popular across the world. The Olympics is a global stage and braids are back in the limelight with different styles. Braids are the most convenient hairstyle for athletes. They have always had the biggest impact on fashion and style. Sister William (Venus and Serena) wore braids for years. Scalp braids for men have become popular. Cornrows for men are all the rage now. Men are flaunting their long hair and want to remain stylish yet convenient during sporting events.”
Plenty of hair braiding options
Doris Godambe, Celebrity Bollywood Hairstylist says, “The best thing about braids is their versatility. From cute and practical to classic and edgy, there are many ways to braid your hair. You can braid your hair for weddings, parties, office, beach, college, etc. The options for accessorizing and tying your hair are endless. Be it cornrows, box braids or twists, braids offer plenty of options to express your personality and personal style. You can use hair extensions to add volume and length or add ribbons, beads, fresh flowers and embellishments to your braids with ease.”
