Fall can be a tricky season for beauty lovers. When the temperatures finally start to drop, the first thing you’ll want to do is change your hair color to something more seasonal. Coppery pumpkin and golden blonde are great, but nothing says fall like brunette. A color that’s been booming at hair salons lately is chocolate cherry, which, as the name suggests, is a dark and luxurious hue.
Unlike many other on-trend styles this season, chocolate cherry combines two popular color trends. “Think of it as a beautiful cross between rich brown and cherry red,” says celebrity hairstylist and colorist Ty Simon. And since fall has only just begun, this beautiful color trend is only just getting started. Scroll on to see how you can achieve this style and keep it vibrant all season long.

What is Chocolate Cherry Hair?
“Chocolate cherry hair is a rich brunette shade with just the right amount of red,” says professional hairstylist and colorist Marie Nino. Rather than a monotonous, muted hue, the shade incorporates a variety of colors to create a multi-faceted hue. Espresso brown and rich burgundy hair colors are all the rage these days, and this shade incorporates elements of both. Nino explains that it blends dark chocolate and cherry hues to create a unique, flattering shade.
What to ask for at the salon to achieve the chocolate cherry look
Balance is key when choosing a blended hair color. When booking, Nino suggests asking for a brunette base with soft cherry or red undertones. The end result should be a chocolate color with hints of red mixed in, rather than accented with hues. Some brands even offer pre-blended formulas in warmer tones to take the guesswork out of it.
With that in mind, make sure you pick the colors that will work best with your skin tone. “You can have your stylist customize a combination of warm chocolate browns and red tones to perfectly match your skin tone,” says Nino. She adds that it’s always a good idea to bring along a reference photo to make sure you’re both on the same page. “Photos will help your stylist understand the exact shade and depth you’re going for,” she points out.
How to care for chocolate cherry hair
If you’re familiar with hair color, you know that brunette shades are generally easy to maintain, while reds can be high-maintenance. Because Chocolate Cherry is a blend, you’ll need to get a good washing routine in place to keep your new shade from fading. “Incorporate color-preserving shampoos and conditioners into your routine to keep the color as vibrant and healthy as possible,” says Simon. Nino points out that adding sulfate-free products and washing your hair less frequently can also help keep the shade from fading.
With fall upon us, most people will be using hot tools more frequently. “When styling with heat, be sure to use a heat protectant spray to prevent damage and preserve your color,” says Nino. She also says that limiting sun exposure and opting for a shower filter can help protect your hair from color-dulling UV rays and harsh minerals. “For ultimate results, schedule a gloss treatment every four to six weeks to add shine, refresh your hair, and make it look like it just came out of the salon,” she says.
