SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (Dakota News Now) – Abella is launching pink hair extensions for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Staff and patients gathered Thursday at the Prairie Center in Sioux Falls to collect hair extensions to wear in October.
The “We Care, Pink Hair” fundraiser benefits patients and families at Avera Cancer Institute. Volunteers from local and regional salons will be providing hair extensions throughout the month of October.
“This is a rapid process to make a real impact for cancer patients,” said Tara Kokorek, director of Avera Breast Health.
The event proved so popular that it was expanded to other area venues in Abela. Funds raised stay local.
“If we could make people more aware of the need for annual mammograms, we would be able to detect cancer at an earlier stage,” Kokorek said.
Abella staff said the hair extensions raise awareness of preventive measures, as well as awareness for those battling breast cancer.
“Research in oncology is hard. I work with the breast team, so I want to see these patients and do whatever little I can to give them credit.” said Kailey Feiner, Avera Oncology Clinical Research Coordinator.
