The hair styling industry has experienced numerous changes in recent years, from the accessibility of social media to new styling techniques, and the concept of hair care has also evolved over time.
In Raleigh County, Eva Toney of Rockabilly Hair Salon in Sofia is one such innovator. Rockabilly Hair Salon, which opened just over a month ago on Aug. 13, represents the realization of a lifelong dream for the hairstylist and artist. Growing up in Greenbrier County, Tony was surrounded by hairdressers including his aunt, his best friend’s mother, and a neighbor, which instilled a passion for beauty at an early age.
“Ever since I was a kid, I was playing with my friends and Barbie dolls, and they all cut their hair,” she says with a laugh, recalling her childhood passion for beauty.
Despite this clear direction, Tony took several detours in life until he fully committed to his dream. Tony attended college for a short time, but soon realized his heart was in hairdressing. This led Tony to enroll at Beckley Academy of Cosmetology, from which he graduated in 2004.
“I went to college for a little bit, but ended up going to beauty school,” Tony recalls. “I got married and moved to Raleigh County, and then I had a kid, so I took some time off,” Tony remembers fondly.
The Toney family has always been a source of support and strength, with her husband, Tim Toney, and their three children providing guidance and emotional support when needed. However, the break was not permanent as Tony had a clear vision to improve his skills and continue his education.
Tony’s commitment to technological advancement is reflected in his partnership with Schwarzkopf, a renowned German hair care brand known for its innovative products and techniques. As part of his dedication to mastering his craft, Tony underwent specialized training in Los Angeles to learn the latest trends in coloring, styling, and product application.
“I really started trying to get into it six years ago. I started classes in January and went to Los Angeles for certification training in August. said Tony.
This experience not only expanded her expertise but also helped give Rockabilly Hair Salon an edge.
“So I’ve been working in hair for over 20 years and I’m just about ready to grab the corner and open my own shop,” Tony said confidently.
The salon’s name comes from Tony’s love for all things nostalgic and vintage.
“I’m a bit of an eccentric person, and I love the old, vintage pin-up style. My favorite movie is ‘Grease,’ and I love Elvis’ music.”
The name Rockabilly pays homage to this aesthetic and is an expression of the style that Tony embodies.
As with opening any business, there are still challenges. The team is still small, with only Tony himself doing the actual hairdressing and coloring, but this is partially by design. Asked if it was because it was difficult to find people to work for him, Tony said, “That’s definitely true,” but added, “Honestly, I wanted to settle down first.”
But despite having a small team and a fresh start, Tony already has a loyal customer base that is eager to support him.
“We just wanted a space where people could come and feel good about themselves,” Tony said.
Rockabilly Hair Salon is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
