When the temperature drops a few degrees, people instinctively seek out pumpkin spice lattes and warm hair colors. Specifically, red. More specifically, it’s a mulled wine and coppery shade. I should know. I go back and forth between brown hair and red hair at the pace of two sugared toddlers on a seesaw. 2024 will be no different, in fact, a very special shade of red will turn heads everywhere: foxy redhead.
In fact, Pinterest revealed in its latest trends report that searches for “fox hair color” have increased by a whopping 1,530% since last year. It’s not just the shade of red that’s attracting attention. Searches for “cherry blonde,” “deep cherry red hair,” and “cherry cola red” have also skyrocketed over the past year. Although these shades of red are about to be seen everywhere, only 2% of the world’s population have natural red hair. That means people are going to flood colorists across the country.
Like the fur of the animal it’s named after (not a synonym for “sexy”), foxy red is more orange than red. This is basically a cute new nickname coined by the internet. “Foxy red is the cowboy copper of the year,” says San Francisco-based colorist Tyler Johnson. However, there are some distinguishing features. “It’s such a natural copper tone, it almost sounds like it’s coming from your head. It’s the perfect combination of bright gold and copper.” (If you want to try it for yourself, repeat these words to your colorist. )
