The beauty influencer said that if you want your hair to look beautiful, you need to spend more money on hair care products. Another creator suggested going to the drugstore.
Which hair products you buy will depend on your hair type, needs, and budget.
But a debate has erupted online over whether a product’s price has a big impact on the outcome of your hair.
The video that started it all
In a trending video with over 30,000 views, hair, beauty and lifestyle creator Clau Lynn (@clauulynnn) makes a controversial opinion.
“If you’re using $10 shampoo and conditioner, don’t be surprised if your hair looks like $10,” says Klau Lin.
She added that using “great, high-end products” that cost more “will make your hair look like a million dollars.”
Clau Lynn specifically recommends MONAT’s $161 shampoo, conditioner, and scalp serum kit and $37 leave-in cream in a link in her bio.
Klau Lin’s hair certainly looks great, but it might not just be the hair products. (Genetics may play a big role.)
MONAT is known for its natural ingredients, but only a few years ago the Florida Attorney General’s Office conducted an investigation after dozens of customers complained about the product’s hair loss and misleading claims. ABC News Tampa Bay reported.
cheaper perspective
In a viral video with over 3.6 million views, popular creator Mila Jay (@vanilla_swirlxx) respectfully disagrees while splicing together Klau Lin’s videos.
“Not everyone wants to spend $50 or $100 on shampoo, conditioner, or leave-in conditioner,” Mila Jay said, adding, “Believe it or not, if you want healthy, shiny hair, , you don’t need expensive hair care products.
Mila Jay, who has had a variety of hair colors over the years, said she has always used drugstore products and continues to do so even though she now has “bleached” hair.
Here are her favorites (no, she’s not sponsored by L’Oréal).

“If you’re someone who’s on a hair care journey, you want long hair, healthy hair, shiny hair, whatever it is. Don’t buy a $100 product just because someone on TikTok told you to.” Don’t feel the need to go buy everything,” Mila Jay said.

Are expensive shampoos worth it?
The short answer, according to this expert, is no.
Perry Romanowski, cosmetic chemist and founder of Chemist Corner, told Well+Good that “the shampoo you use doesn’t really matter,” as long as you use conditioner after shampooing.
That’s because when it comes to the bottom line, most shampoo products can do their job (i.e. cleaning hair) pretty effectively. For more expensive shampoos, you typically pay for the amount of conditioning agents in the product to soften your hair after rinsing.
But it doesn’t really matter if you’re going to use a conditioner afterwards anyway.
Victoria Hu, cosmetic chemist and co-founder of Chemist Confessions, says, “Most of the functional hair cleansing ingredients are pretty much the same between mass and luxury brands, so I’m not looking to splurge on this category.” spoke.
Romanowski cited Pantene, Garnier Fructis and Tresemme as easily accessible, reliable and inexpensive brands.
However, if you’re someone who cares about certain ethical or environmental considerations, such as purchasing vegan, organic, or cruelty-free products, brand and price may be more important to you. In that case, a higher price point may suit your needs better.
“$10 shampoo is expensive,” one commenter wrote, and other commenters agreed.
“The worst conditioner I’ve ever used was $50,” one person said.
“I’m with Olaplex. I don’t understand the hype or the price. That’s a no from me,” another added.
“My hair got really bad because I was buying luxury products. I went to the drugstore again and my hair is so much healthier,” said a viewer.
