Congressman petitions FDA amid numerous studies linking certain hair-straightening chemicals to cancer

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (September 29, 2024) – Three members of Congress are asking the Food and Drug Administration to ban formaldehyde in curling irons.

The members were identified as Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Ohio), and Rep. Nydia Velasquez (New York). Their calls come at the same time as a growing body of evidence shows that formaldehyde can cause cancer and other health problems.

But formaldehyde isn’t the only potentially harmful chemical found in common chemical curling irons.

According to a study published by the National Institutes of Health, “Several chemicals in hair straighteners, including parabens, bisphenol A, metals, and formaldehyde, may contribute to the observed increased risk of uterine cancer. There may be.”

The FDA originally planned to ban formaldehyde, but has now delayed that guidance for months.

Responsibility for diseases caused by hair irons

In addition to being used in hair products, formaldehyde has many other commercial uses. According to the NIH, “Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-odor, flammable chemical that is produced industrially and used in construction materials such as particle board, plywood, and other pressed wood products. Additionally, it is used to disinfect It is commonly used as a disinfectant, disinfectant, and as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories.”This is a dangerous chemical that causes many health problems.

Companies that manufacture beauty products have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. This requires compliance with all regulations by the appropriate governing bodies. This could be from the Consumer Product Safety Commission or the Food and Drug Administration. If a company sells a product that uses dangerous chemicals that cause cancer, it may be the basis for a product liability claim. After developing an illness related to formaldehyde exposure, it is important to properly preserve evidence.

Medical records must be collected. Victims should continue to seek the treatment they need. The source of exposure must be identified. Contact an experienced product liability attorney.

It has been known for some time that formaldehyde is a dangerous chemical. Despite this, many companies that sell chemical curling irons continue to use chemical curling irons in their products. It is important that people harmed by formaldehyde exposure understand that they have legal options. A product liability attorney will review all the facts specific to your case and let you know what your legal options are.
