Dyson Chitosan Prestyle Cream

At first it was a vacuum cleaner. Then there was the hair dryer. Dyson has completely revolutionized these categories, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Their latest disruptor is hair care products, their first foray into the category.

“We make hair dryers and hair stylers, and the next thing is of course to keep the style as long as possible, and we can use formulations to help with that,” says Dyson. “In fact, you can double the duration of your style. We’ve worked with a lot of chemical scientists over the years, and developing the formula in parallel with the science of developing hair dryers is… A very wise move. What we have done.”

This collection includes Dyson Chitosan Prestyle Cream and Dyson Chitosan Poststyle Serum. These products are designed to be used in conjunction with hot tools, especially those made by Dyson, but since no heat activation is required, they can also be used by those who choose to let their hair air dry. Intended to be applied to wet, towel-dried hair from mid-lengths to ends before heat styling, the thick cream transforms into a light serum in your hands for even application. Chitosan Prestyle Cream is available in four variations covering all hair types: straight to wavy (light, rich conditioning) and curly to coily (light, rich conditioning). In addition to chitosan, it also contains grapeseed, castor oil, argan oil, and beeswax to fight frizz and boost shine.

Dyson Chitosan Post Style Serum is intended to be applied to dry, styled hair (including air-dried styles) to provide definition, hold and shine. The lightweight serum contains amino acids to help repair surface damage and hyaluronic acid to prevent moisture-induced frizz.

“There’s an NFC chip inside the package, so when you tap your phone on it, it launches the Dyson website where you can find out more about the ingredients, how to use the product, videos and more. You can also replenish products,” says Justina Mejia-Montane, Global Head of Product Innovation and Packaging Development at Dyson Beauty. “We want to make the consumer experience more seamless, and the possibilities are expanding. This is the first connected formulation, so these systems and links will be created and This allows us to stay up to date in terms of innovation and have a feedback loop that allows us to always know where we need to go next.”

There are already many products out there aimed at preserving style, but Dyson wanted to dig deeper. “We understand hair science and the scalp,” says Dyson. “We want to value both, and we want you to maintain the look that you’ve styled right now. So a lot of existing products have a crunchy, crunchy texture, so we’re taking that a little bit further. It seemed very logical to work on the formulation and use something natural. It doesn’t move, it doesn’t feel soft. We removed all that and it looked just like it was there. We want to create products that are flexible and shiny, but that do what they need to do.”

The main ingredient in both is chitosan, a complex polymer derived from oyster mushrooms. This compound is also found in seashells, but unlike seashells, mushrooms are highly sustainable. Crafted with Dyson Triodetic technology, the range offers all-day hold, yet flexible movement and shine. Most hair care products use simple polymers to hold hair in place with rigid bonds, but Dyson’s technology works differently to avoid that crunchy, stiff texture.

“With this particular macromolecule we call Triodetic, what we’ve done is instead of trying to stick the hairs together (to hold them together), this Triodetic macromolecule forms around each hair. “What we’ve found is that it holds the hair in the shape you set it to,” says Dyson. “It’s still flexible and can move around, but it has memory and will return to that state.”

Mejia-Montane explains that tripolar polymers essentially create a network-like structure that resembles a web. “Imagine it’s like a triangle and your hair is going through that triangle,” she says. “In the same way that tube mascara creates little tubes in your eyelashes, this creates tubes in almost individual hair strands. What makes it Triodetic is the triangular shape, which is one of the strongest shapes in architecture. We have trademarked this technology and the way it works with hair to create webbing.”

Dyson has also just improved its Airwrap ID, a multi-styler and dryer that doesn’t cause heat damage. The brand’s first connected beauty device now offers a personalized experience through the id Curl app. You input your hair type and the style you want to achieve, and the app guides you through precise styling, taking out timing and guesswork, including how long to hold your hair on hot and cold settings for the best results. “The really great thing about airwrap ID is that it has an integrated Bluetooth chip without changing its diameter or shape,” says Catherine Magowan, category development engineer at Dyson. “While its real purpose is to create consistency in your style, there are several steps to achieving perfect curls, so it can also help with the initial learning curve when purchasing the product.” There are three stages: the wrapping stage, the styling stage, and the cooling stage.It’s truly customizable.” Mejia Montane says, “Create your beautiful curls and beach waves with Chitosan Prestyle Cream. You can make it last twice as long by using it,” he added.

That’s not the only new thing. Dyson just opened a store in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. Dyson stores are different from other retail experiences because they act as showrooms. “I wanted the front of the electronics store, where you walk in and there’s a ton of stuff,” Dyson says. “I wanted a relaxed atmosphere. The idea was inspired by the markets I used to go to in the south of France on vacation, where they sold all sorts of things, including olives and fruit. The SoHo store is housed in a former fire station built in 1854, with offices above the retail space. “It has its own personality, which is great,” Dyson says. “It’s a beautiful space and we prefer to use old spaces rather than build new spaces for sustainability reasons. This approach is consistent with the rest of Dyson’s philosophy. Instead of launching new products, they prefer to keep evolving and advancing their existing products, like the new technology they introduced in their airwrap ID. That’s mainly due to sustainability reasons and their drive to continue pushing the industry forward. “From the beginning, we wanted to reduce our electricity usage,” says Dyson. “Our hair dryers use 10 times less power than traditional hair dryers, so they use less material, less power, and are more efficient. This is very important. We want to do more with less, and that’s a common tendency among all of our engineers. We’ve never made a big song or dance about it. I just did it and I think that’s the right way to do things. Engineers solve problems.”

To train the next generation of engineers, Dyson has set up its own university in the UK, where students work and get paid in the company while they complete their degree. Dyson’s biggest challenge is developing new technology and finding new ways to make things work better. It’s most rewarding when I can do that. “When you have technology like these motors that can do better, it’s incredible,” Dyson says. “It’s really exciting to be able to make it better, lighter, smaller and create completely different products.”
