Nationwide – Would you change your hair for work? This bold question is the subject of a groundbreaking exhibition, “BAD Hair Uprooted: The Untold History of Black,” opening October 10th at Restoration Plaza in Brooklyn, New York. At the heart of Follicles. Through a powerful collection of interviews with non-Black people, this exhibition provides new perspectives on the far-reaching effects of hair discrimination and unequal hair rights.
While award-winning social entrepreneur and photographer Mireille Lyon (Mireille Lyon, Mississippi) celebrates the beauty and diversity of natural hair, there are deeper issues that continue to promote hair-based discrimination. We seek to expose social prejudice. BAD Hair Uprooted flips the script and exposes long-ignored prejudices that go beyond an individual’s physical appearance and into issues of race, identity, and self-expression.
From the untold history of black hair follicles, the bad hair that has been uprooted:
Black people are uniquely pressured to conform to Eurocentric hair standards, especially in the workplace. For Black women, this often involves chemically altering their natural hair or wearing wigs and wigs to meet restrictive and outdated dress codes just to maintain employment. It means that. The effects of these pressures are surprising. 73% of Black women suffer from hair loss, class action lawsuits against companies that make toxic relaxants are on the rise, and the Black hair care industry has grown into the billions, disproportionately affecting communities of color. It has a great influence.
BAD Hair Uprooted: The Untold History of Black Follicles explores the physical, emotional, and economic toll of hair discrimination through thought-provoking photography and deeply personal stories. In each portrait, the lions speak out about the urgent need for the right to hair equality, one headshot at a time.
To accompany the exhibition, a limited edition photo book that delves into the themes presented can be ordered.
