Bareilly: A case has emerged at a district hospital that has taken doctors by surprise. A 21-year-old young woman had not just a small lump of hair removed from her stomach, but a mass of hair weighing as much as 2 kilograms, after surgery.
Doctors shared this information Friday when the girl was discharged from the hospital. The girl is currently in good health and is resting at home.
Subhashnagar, a 21-year-old woman from Kalgaina, was suffering from abdominal pain for about five years. Despite consulting several medical practitioners, the cause of her illness remained unknown. Finally, her family took her to a district hospital where a CT scan revealed a hair-like mass in her stomach.
She was admitted to the district hospital on September 22, and an operation was performed about a week ago to remove nearly 2 kilograms of hair from her stomach.
Psychiatrist Dr Ashish Kumar explained that the girl underwent counseling after the surgery. When her family was questioned, they had no idea how so much hair got into her stomach.
When we spoke to the girl, it was revealed that she had been secretly eating her own hair for the past 16 years. Counseling sessions will continue for several months to ensure she does not repeat this behavior in the future.
Doctors said the girl suffered from hair eating disorder, and had so much hair in her stomach that she was unable to eat. A CT scan of her stomach revealed the presence of caterpillars, a condition associated with the mental disorder trichotillomania.
The successful operation was performed by senior surgeons Dr MP Singh, Dr Anjali Soni, Dr Mugdha Sharma, staff nurse Mr Bhavna and psychiatrists Dr Ashish Kumar and Dr Prajya Maheshwari of the district hospital. .
