As summer turns cooler and autumn arrives, listen carefully and you’ll hear the sound of leaves losing their green color as they fall to the ground. If you listen further, you can hear someone asking the colorist, “I’d like to have red hair for fall.”
Embracing auburn for fall isn’t a new concept, but it’s definitely a trendy one.
“Currently, auburn/darker shades are making a comeback when it comes to red hair,” says celebrity colorist Dimitris Giannetos. “Especially with the cowboy copper trend that took off in the summer, people are looking for more subtle shades of red. As we move into fall, this trend accelerates as we move away from tanned blondes and towards darker vibes. I think so.”

It is best to match the shade of red with your skin tone. “If you have cool undertones, dye your hair in a cool shade. If you have warm undertones, choose a warm hair color,” says Cavalcante. Red is tricky because it is a very unique color that is not natural to the majority of the population, so choosing the wrong undertone will make it stand out more than if you had chosen the wrong tone of brown, for example.
