A hairstylist who spent nearly 30 years behind bars has revealed that the hair “mistakes” that many women make can “accelerate aging.”
Justin Hickox, who has been a hairstylist since 1995, advised women to switch up their one-length blunt cuts for more layered styles.
Regarding a female customer who wrote to Justin asking for hair advice, experts noted that her bob haircut looked unnecessarily aged. This is because she had layers on the front of her face, but not on the nape or top.
According to experts, ignoring these specific demographics is a “mistake” and could cause you to “age faster.”
Adding volume to the neck is important for a youthful look

First, Justin explained why he adds layers to the nape of his neck. He claimed that extra “bulk” at the bottom, as a result of a lack of layers, “pulls the eye back and forth.”
The expert said, “I think adding a little more chamfering and a little more shape in the back would go a long way in relieving the squareness and lifting the shape upwards.”
“Pull that part out from the nape of your neck and immediately start drawing the eyes over that shape.
“This also helps create the illusion of more volume at the top because there’s less volume at the bottom.”
Layering also has the effect of creating dimension and texture, which can help with a more youthful look.
Justin continued, “This also creates the illusion that the angle is a little harsher than it actually is.
“This is great because you want it to be angled in line with your jawline, but you don’t want it to be too angled or too long in the front.”
Another hair “mistake” that can make women look older, experts say, is not having enough layers on the top of the head.
He argued that the “biggest problem” with this was that it added “heaviness” and did not help with volume.
Also, if there is not enough volume at the top, the volume at the sides will be emphasized, giving the impression of volume and drawing the eyes downward.

Justin says, “Oftentimes, the shape of the bob can feel a bit like a helmet and look a little too unnatural.”
He explained that by layering your hair a little more, you can create volume on top and take some bulk off the sides.
The expert continued, “It can also help you gain more movement to make your overall shape more current and overall more youthful.”
