According to a report in the Free Press Journal, the incident took place around 11 pm on October 6 near Shri Ram temple in Nawabandar village in Gujarat’s Somnath district.
Wrong person: dog or lion?
Unaware of the impending danger, the couple initially mistook a figure standing in the middle of the road for a stray dog. But as they got closer, they realized a terrible truth. What stood before them was not a dog, but a lion.
After a moment of shock and fear, the couple’s instincts kicked in and they jumped off the bike. In a panic, they abandoned their car and ran for their lives down the road, trying to escape the big cat’s jaws.

Lion reaction: more curious than aggressive
Interestingly, the lion did not appear aggressive. Surveillance camera footage showed the animal appeared more confused than prey. As the couple sprinted away, the lion watched them silently with what appeared to be mild curiosity. I slowly started following them in the direction they were running, but I didn’t try to chase them or attack them.
A nearby stray dog also ran away from the scene, probably startled by the lion’s presence or the couple’s sudden escape. It remains a mystery whether the dog was more afraid of the lion or the fleeing human.

Previous lion sightings in Gujarat
This is not the first time a lion has been sighted near a human village in Gujarat. Earlier this year, 14 lions, including lionesses and cubs, were caught on camera crossing a road in Amreli district near Gir National Park. The video went viral on social media, captivating viewers with the rare sight of large prides moving together in the dark.
