I don’t know about you, but when the weather turns cold, there’s nothing more fun than curling up in front of the TV and enjoying a movie marathon. While some people prefer to settle down and watch the latest doc or blockbuster movie on Netflix, I’m a creature of habit and find myself rewatching something I’ve probably seen close to 100 times. He repeats every word and attacks anyone who dares to interrupt him.
Most recently, I’ve found myself back in the cozy fall rom-com bubble, watching How Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, and the ultimate spooky season rom-com, Practical Magic. ” and other masterpieces. From this, I realized something that excites my beauty editor senses. Every leading lady is rocking the most perfect head of waves. Hair types vary, but one of the dominant hair trends in romantic comedies is wavy hair, which gives an effortless yet graceful look.
I’m in the process of reviving my curls, and of course I’ve been obsessed with achieving 90’s inspired leave-in waves. So we spoke to Sam Barnett, founder and creative director of HARE &. If you want to know how to make it, go to BONE Salon. Keep scrolling to see what he had to say…
“Romantic Wave is the perfect blend of sophisticated yet relaxed, making it feel real, approachable and effortlessly beautiful,” says Sam. “Today’s waves can be a little more defined, sophisticated, and textured, while romantic waves are more natural and loose. Think less beachy and more classic.”
“The great thing is that romantic waves work on all hair types,” he continues. “With the right products and techniques, you can enhance your natural texture. At the salon, look for soft, loose waves with a natural flow. Loose and carefree, yet still able to hold their shape. It has enough structure.”
romantic wave inspiration
Meg Ryan’s “When Harry Met Sally” soft waves are a lesson in harnessing your hair’s natural texture and getting the most out of it. It even allows for some 80’s fluff left behind her bangs.
Well, maybe it’s not a romantic comedy, but Lisa Bonet’s original wave as Dennis Huchtable matches the same energy, so it deserves a spot on this list.
Sandra Bullock’s Sally switches effortlessly between sleek straight hair and perfect romantic waves throughout Practical Magic, and I’d love to recreate both looks.
You need to study Sarah Jessica Parker’s waves in Sex and the City. It’s voluminous, perfectly tousled, full of movement, and perfect.
How to style romantic comedy waves
How much you need to style romantic waves will depend on your hair’s natural texture and the look you want to achieve, but make sure your hair has movement, body, and some sort of curl or wave. Typical romantic comedy look.
“To style rom-com waves at home, we recommend using the BaByliss Pro curling wand to create loose waves,” says Sam. Part your hair and then use a wand to section it into smaller sections to give it plenty of volume and bounce. “Then apply Davines Texture Spray for a tousled hold without any stiffness,” advises Sam.
“To keep your waves fresh, prep your hair with a supple-hold mousse and be careful not to touch it too much. A little natural movement is key to maintaining that overdone feel.”
I’ve found that the more time passes, the better your romantic waves get, so don’t be afraid to skip wash day and spray on dry shampoo instead. It combines texture and volume to create a loose-fitting style.
