SAN MARCOS, Texas — A man tested positive for rabies after a bat flew into his hair while he was walking outside, the City of San Marcos reports.
According to a press release on Friday, Oct. 15, San Marcos animal protection officers received a report of a person being exposed to bats in a residential area.
A caller reported that a bat flew into someone’s hair while they were out on the night of Oct. 14 near the 1900 block of Gibraltar Drive.
The bat was collected and sent to the State Health Services Laboratory in Austin for rabies testing. The bat subsequently tested positive for the rabies virus. Exposed individuals have been notified and are seeking post-exposure treatment to prevent rabies.
Report any contact with a bat immediately to Animal Protection at 512-805-2655. You should also report any bats found on the ground or inside your home. Residents are being asked not to touch bats if they come across one.
