“Cosmetic herbs often offer benefits that go far beyond their cosmetic benefits,” says Adriana Ayares, clinical herbalist and founder of modern pharmacy Anima Mundi Herbals. Ayales cites protective antioxidants as an example. Beneficial effects from within the body are in contrast to chemically derived ingredients, which Ayales points out can do more harm than good. These simple ingredients and on-trend approaches will improve your hair health.

1. Rosemary

Rosemary oil has recently gained attention on TikTok as a hair growth treatment, and the claim is at least partially proven. Ayales explains that rosemary oil increases circulation in the scalp, which explains many growth claims. This is less a magic trick and more a result of the herb’s antioxidants and antibacterial and antifungal properties, each of which can boost scalp health, unclog hair follicles, and promote hair growth.

Ayales suggests “harnessing the power of rosemary essential oil by infusing it into your shampoo or massaging it into your scalp.” Choose pure rosemary oil or a product that contains it, like Kitsch’s Rosemary Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil with Biotin.

2. Scalp massage

Improving your hair health is as easy as incorporating regular scalp massages into your daily routine. Gently massaging your scalp in circular motions with your fingers or a tool like Briogeo’s Scalp Regeneration Stimulation Therapy Massager removes build-up on the scalp, increases blood circulation, improves skin health and makes it thicker. 3. Coconut oil

“Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids that moisturize and strengthen your hair,” says Ayales. “It’s great for locking in moisture, reducing split ends, and adding shine,” says Ayales, adding that coconut oil can help protect against damage, promote scalp health, and reduce dandruff and inflammation. 4. Rice soup

Another ancient treatment that has become a viral trend, rice water has been used for centuries to strengthen hair and improve scalp health. The minerals, vitamins (E, B), and amino acids found in rice water make this simple DIY remedy worth incorporating into your existing routine.

The method is simple, just soak the rice a little and save it as the water. If that seems a little too grassroots for your taste, try Shu Uemura’s Izumi Tonic Enhanced Rice Water Treatment.

5. Apple cider vinegar

“Apple cider vinegar is a powerhouse for hair health,” Ayales says. “It helps balance the pH of your scalp, removes excess product buildup, and cleanses your hair to give it a clean, fresh start.” It added that it is rich in vitamins and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium that enhance radiance. “Plus, it has natural antibacterial properties, which can help soothe itchy scalp and prevent dandruff,” Ayales says.

ACV is best used as a rinse once or twice a week. “After shampooing, dilute 1 to 2 tablespoons of ACV in a glass of water, pour into scalp and hair, and massage gently,” says Ayales. Let the vinegar sit for a few minutes before rinsing off to avoid excess shampoo, conditioner, and product build-up on your mane and scalp. “It also helps close the hair cuticle, making it smoother and less tangled,” says Ayales.

6. Nettle

“Nettle, a common ‘weed’ found around the world, contains large amounts of calcium, silica, and sulfur, which help increase collagen receptors,” Ayares says. This plant has been used for centuries to prevent hair loss, promote healthy, shiny hair, and nourish the scalp. You should probably eat it too. “Nettle alone is like a multivitamin for your entire body, as it is rich in vitamins A, B1, B5, C, D, and E,” says Ayales.

As with ACV, rinsing with nettle is your best bet. Soak dried or fresh nettles in boiling water for 5-10 minutes, let cool, and then apply to the scalp and hair. After washing, wash as usual.

7. Skip laundry (but not too much)

Feeling lazy? Postpone daily cleansing. By refraining from shampooing for a day or two, the natural oils from your scalp can coat, protect, and nourish your hair. However, there are benefits to keeping it clean. Removing unwanted buildup from your scalp frees up your hair follicles, prevents hair breakage, and strengthens your hair overall.
