It’s official: Hair gloss has officially taken over the TikTok beauty community. You’ve probably seen girls with shiny, moisturized, healthy hair all over FYP. And guess what? If done correctly, you can even do it from home. We bring you a step-by-step guide to DIY hair gloss. We asked a professional hair colorist to tell us all the secrets.
Please select a product
First, you need to choose the right hair gloss for your mane. There are many different types of glosses on the market, but the ones preferred by professionals (or at least the ones closest to salon-grade) use developers, also known as compounds, to help process the hair gloss solution.
One of our favorite affordable gloss options is Sally Beauty’s Ion Demi Permanent Intensive Shine Cream (which pairs perfectly with Level 10 Developer). Pro tip: Double-check the package label to make sure it gives your hair a clear shine, especially if you want to add shine without adding extra color.

For best results, we recommend getting the following:
– gloves
– Hair gloss cream/solution
– Developer
・Brush (makes it easier to apply!)
– Squeeze the bottle or small plastic bowl (this also makes application easier!)
– Shower cap or hair cover

Application period
Mix 1 part hair gloss cream with 2 parts developer (for example, you should mix 1 ounce of hair gloss with 2 ounces of developer). These can be mixed in a bowl or squeeze bottle, making measuring the product and applying the product easier. If mixing in a squeeze bottle, cover the top with your finger and shake until the mixture appears fully combined.
Now put on your gloves and separate your hair into two parts (see below).
Use a bottle to squeeze the mixture into your hair, or scoop some of the product from a bowl and use a brush to distribute it evenly from the roots to the ends of your hair. Make sure each hair strand is coated completely and evenly.
Hair should appear wet and each strand should be covered from top to bottom. Then, secure your hair and put on a shower cap or another cover over your hair. Let shine for 10-40 minutes.
take a shower
Hair glosses can be drying, so it’s important to add moisture back to your hair when washing out the product. You may want to use a gentle moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is naturally dry, you can also add a moisturizing mask.

styling cues
Heat style after shower. According to professional hair colorist Lucille Javier, heat styling your hair immediately after using a gloss treatment will give you even more radiant results. The easiest way to dry and heat style your hair is with a round brush dryer.

Take a peek at these FAQs…
Will this affect my wave or curl pattern?
Hair gloss does not affect wave or curl patterns. All hair types can benefit from hair gloss treatments.
How often can hair gloss be done?
It should not be done more than once a month at most.
How long does the shine last?
“Gloss treatments typically last anywhere from a few weeks to a month, depending on how often you shampoo and heat style,” says Javier. The less often you wash your hair, the longer the results will last (but be sure to wash your hair regularly even if you gloss it).
