HATTIESBURG, Mich. (WDAM) – A local business owner is researching the effects of hair removal and how cosmetologists can help women feel comfortable and confident as they undergo breast cancer treatment.
Christy Matthews wears several hats when she enters the hair salon every day.
Matthews’ salon is much more than just cosmetics.
“My services go a little deeper into the science and research of hair removal and scalp care,” Matthews said.
Matthews is a cosmetologist and certified hair removal specialist, practicing the latter field at Like a Lotus Hair Rehab, LLC in Hattiesburg.
After developing a form of hair loss while pregnant with her son, she wanted to further expand her abilities into treatment through holistic health.
“The holistic approach helped me a little bit more than the traditional approach, and that’s what drove me to learn how to become a holistic practitioner,” she said. .
When it comes to helping deep scalp regeneration, the focus is on mind, body and hair, but first comes the tricoscope.
“This is a device that can blow up parts of the face and look a little deeper. It doesn’t look like an X-ray, but you can see different elements starting or developing. ,” Matthews said.
“A lot of what I see is due to genetics and a woman’s hormones.”
Then head to the hair spa bed for a halo treatment that includes a variety of cleansing treatments to cleanse and regrow your hair.
Matthews said she makes sure her scalp is fresh before she indulges.
“My biggest takeaway is that prevention is key,” she said. “If we can start early, it may not be a curable disease, but it can be sustained.”
Her services go above and beyond by formulating her own Halo Oil, which uses nourishing herbs and other essentials to stimulate hair growth for her clients.
In addition to that, she founded her own non-profit organization called Hair of Hope for cancer patients experiencing scarring hair loss.
“I know I can’t get rid of the cancer, I know I can’t take away the pain, but sometimes it makes me feel better when I look at myself,” Matthews said. “It doesn’t have to look like what you’re going through.”
Matthews has been a hairdresser for the past 13 years and has been researching hair removal for six years.
