If you want long and shiny hair, try using castor oil for hair growth! Find out about its benefits and how it can bring you healthy hair.

When it comes to moisturizing your hair, choosing the right oil can make a big difference. Castor oil is one such popular option. The thick, pale yellow vegetable oil produced from the seeds of the castor plant has many benefits. What makes it great for your hair is that it’s rich in ricinoleic acid, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. It is included in many hair and skin care products because of its moisturizing and strengthening effects on hair. In addition to this, the use of castor oil for hair growth is also one of the reasons why it is the first choice for hair.

This oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, which is beneficial for your hair, especially if you suffer from hair loss. According to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, ricinoleic acid may improve hair loss. “It can promote hair growth by increasing blood circulation to the hair follicles and increasing the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles,” explains dermatologist Dr. Neha Kulaana.

This oil also contains fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology selected 120 participants with female pattern hair loss. Half of them took supplements containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for six months, and the other half took no supplements. Researchers found that participants who took the supplement had thicker hair than those who did not. Participants who took the supplement also noticed less hair loss.

Are there any other benefits of castor oil for hair?

This type of oil may help hair growth, prevent hair loss, and has several other benefits for your hair.

1. Hair moisturizer

If you have dry hair, you can apply this oil to nourish your hair. A study published in the International Journal of Trichology in 2022 found that ricinoleic acid and its derivatives have moisturizing effects. Ricinoleic acid acts as a natural emollient and can easily lock in moisture in your hair.

2. Strengthens hair strands.

It is also rich in omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, which can promote strong hair. “These fatty acids strengthen the hair shaft and, as a result, prevent hair breakage,” says the expert. Hair breakage should be avoided as it can make your hair look unkempt. If this continues, your hair may become thinner.

3. Anti-inflammatory effect

Dandruff and itching are some of the common problems related to the scalp. According to a study published in the journal Nutrient in May 2024, this oil has beneficial effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifungal properties, making it particularly effective against ricinoleic acid-induced dandruff and itchy scalp. 4. Gives shine to hair

This nourishing oil is a natural emollient, making it perfect for those with curly or dry hair. It can not only eliminate hair dryness but also give your hair a smoother look. “It can also add shine to your hair,” says the expert.

How can I use castor oil on my hair?

1. For dry hair

People with curly or dry hair can use a combination of this oil and coconut oil in a 50:50 ratio. “Coconut oil also has moisturizing properties because it contains lauric acid,” says the expert. Use this hair oil combination on your hair and wash it off with shampoo after a few hours.

2. For oily hair

Although this oil helps hair growth, it is also greasy. Therefore, if you have an oily scalp, you should mix this oil with lighter oils to balance out the natural oils in your scalp. So, mix 1 part oil and 2 parts jojoba oil and apply it on your scalp. Wash off 30 minutes after application.

3. For curly hair

Curly hair can be difficult to maintain because it tangles easily. “Pair it with argan oil, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E,” says the expert. Mix these in a 50:50 ratio and apply it to your hair to maintain curls.

4. For thinning hair

People with thin hair need oils that won’t put stress on their hair. Almond oil is light and non-greasy. So, if you have thin hair, you can mix 1 part castor oil with 3 parts almond oil.

What are the side effects?

In rare cases, you may experience acute hair felting, a condition in which your hair twists and tangles, according to a study published in the International Journal of Trichology in 2017. In some cases, improper use of this oil can cause more hair loss. If used undiluted, hair may become tangled easily. Its thick consistency causes oil to build up on the scalp, making the hair look more oily and can clog hair pores, especially for people with oily scalps. Apply only once a week, especially as overuse can cause irritation to the scalp.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. Can I use castor oil directly on my hair?

It is better to dilute it before applying it to your scalp. Due to its thick consistency, many people prefer to dilute it with another oil, such as coconut oil. The thick nature of this oil can cause oil buildup in your hair, making it look oily, so use it in moderation.

2. Can castor oil be used for scalp psoriasis?

Yes, the ricinoleic acid present in this oil is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent. Reduces scalp symptoms such as redness, itching, and irritation. This also helps treat scalp psoriasis. However, consult your dermatologist before using it as a treatment for scalp psoriasis.

3. Is it okay to leave castor oil on my scalp overnight?

You can also leave it on your scalp overnight as it takes time for the oil to penetrate into your scalp and hair follicles. However, you need to wash it thoroughly with shampoo the next day to prevent the oil from becoming sticky. However, due to the thick consistency of the oil, it is recommended to leave it on your hair for 1-2 hours. If you already have oily hair, don’t leave it on overnight as it can clog your pores.
