How does someone’s “thing” of beauty become “something” of that person’s beauty? That’s the question we ask celebrities and their beauty professionals in our new series, Just One Thing. Of course, as journalists, we also take the opportunity to ask them about the one product that helps them keep things running.
In this article, we spoke to Rachel Bilson at the launch of SimpliSafe’s new Active Guard Outdoor Protection System and Outdoor Security Camera Series 2. The actor, who was the target of Hollywood’s infamous Bling Ring heist in 2009, was on hand to emphasize the importance of being proactive. Home security measures (“Unfortunately, I’m no stranger to break-ins,” she says). But since this is Allure, we asked Bilson if she wouldn’t mind talking about something else she knows a lot about: great hair. Here, we reveal the secret to her signature “undone” waves and reminisce about Summer Roberts’ hair evolution on The OC.
I’ve always had a distinctive hairstyle since I was in elementary school. At that time, her bangs were in a high ponytail. I was on the drill team and the teacher said we needed to match everyone’s hair for the show. It was a half-up situation, so I thought, “I’m not going to do that.” And she said, “No, you have to.” So I had to give up my hairstyle for the show, which in hindsight was the right thing to do.
But my hair was always untied. It wasn’t pretty at all. I don’t like curly hair. For me, it’s always the messier the better. Although it may be called a natural look, my natural hair definitely needs some adjustments. My routine really sucks and I don’t do anything with my hair unless it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t wash it every day because it doesn’t do much for my hair or the frizz that comes with it, but I love R+Co for shampoo and conditioner. I know I might sound like an old lady writing this, but I still swear by (L’Oréal Paris) Elnet (Hairspray). that’s great. It disappears and it’s a miracle.
