As a beauty editor who tries out hundreds of new beauty products a year, I’m always a little skeptical about beauty products that go viral on TikTok. So many products are advertised as “worth the hype,” but very few actually meet my exception. What should I say? I’m hard to please.
However, Colorwow’s Dream Coat may be an exception. The product was launched in the 2010s, but recently became popular on TikTok after celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton demonstrated how to make hair moisturized and water-resistant by pouring water onto it with a pipette. Fame soared. result? The water rolled straight out of his model’s hair.

Colorwow describes Dream Coat as a heat-activated, shine-boosting, moisture-blocking hairspray designed to waterproof hair while achieving an ultra-shiny look. Designed to be sprayed on wet hair after shampooing, it also acts as a heat protection before styling. Because it is heat activated, you will need to use a hair dryer, wet-to-dry hot brush, or hair multi-styler to reap the benefits of this hair styling product.
The Colorwow Dream Coat is available in three versions. The original Dream Coat is designed for straight, fine hair, while the Dream Coat for Curly Hair is designed for curly hair textures. The extra strength version is perfect for those with thick, coily hair.

Customer Review: “This is amazing. My Silk Press lasts a long time, even on rainy days. Don’t get me wrong, the hair will grow back when it comes in contact with water, but when it’s damp outside, the hair stays straight. I was pleasantly surprised!! The silk press is durable and used correctly. My hair is type 4.
Test method
I used the original Dream Coat for my hair, which has a subtle wavy texture and a lot of needle frizz, especially around the crown. After shampooing, I applied this liberally to my hair and used a hot tool to activate the product. I noticed how smooth my hair stayed even when I was walking around in the rain all day long. I’ve been straightening my hair lately, so I was curious about how smooth it would be and how long it would last all day.
How to use Color Wow Dream Coat

After shampooing and conditioning your hair, towel dry your hair. Next, you need to spray this mist liberally on your hair. A few mist strokes are not enough. Ideally, soak your entire hair completely and spray section by section to ensure an even coating.

I blew out my hair with a hairdryer and then switched to the Shark FlexFusion Hairstyler (£370) hair straightening attachment to style my hair straight. I repeated this process until my hair was completely dry.

I was really impressed with how shiny and smooth my hair felt afterwards. My colored hair tends to look dull and lackluster, but my hair had a noticeable shine and looked and felt silky smooth. Even the needle-like hair around the crown of my head bounced and sat flat.

Does Colorwow Dreamcoat make hair waterproof?

Now for the final test: Does Colorwow Dream Coat make your hair waterproof? We don’t recommend jumping headfirst into a swimming pool, but we can attest that it’s water resistant. When I put a drop of water on my hair with a pipette, I saw some droplets running straight down. Some of it did seep into my hair, but my hair remained silky smooth and straight with no signs of frizz.

To try it out, I went out for a walk with my dog in a light rain, and to my surprise, my hair remained pretty silky. Some frizz appeared around the parting, but the rest of the hair remained smooth.
verdict
Is the Colorwow Dreamcoat worth it? I think so. It’s expensive, and you have to use a lot of product to really get it into your hair, but it really works. I like that the effect lasts up to three shampoos, so I don’t have to apply it every time I wash my hair, which makes it a little more cost-effective.
I also appreciated how much shine it gave my hair. It lasted for several days and my hair remained smooth and silky until my next hair wash. Even after the second shampoo, I could notice the smoothing results from the first application.
Highly recommended for those who are concerned about frizz and dryness. Living in the UK, you have to put up with a lot of rainy days, but this is like hair insurance for your everyday hairstyles. Whether you choose the original Dream Coat, the Curly Dream Coat, or the Extra Strength version, you won’t be disappointed.
