This coming Saturday, the 13th annual Armed Forces Natural Hair & Health Expo event returns to Killeen. Organizers say this year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever.
The expo will feature a full day of events, prizes and entertainment, including a special lecture from noted financial expert Boyce Watkins, and performances by boy groups One More (son of Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris) and The The R&B group Whispers. There will also be a chance to win hair braiding classes, Soul Train lines, a free Thanksgiving meal and lots of food, and more.
“I think one of our biggest draws is our hair braiding class. People look forward to it every year,” said the local entrepreneur who founded the event, which focuses on hair care, fashion and more. Rubina Sabry said.
“Another thing they’re looking forward to is the natural hair fashion show for kids and adults,” Sabry said Wednesday.
The event will be held at the Killeen Civic & Conference Center, 3601 SWS Young Drive, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets for the event are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
The event will feature a variety of food, clothing and hair vendors. Local brand Bomb Azz Lemonade will also be offering multiple new flavors.
Among the entertainment, music and workshops, Watkins, who holds a doctorate in economics and has written a book on the subject, will speak at about 4 p.m.
Armed Forces Natural Hair & Health Expo’s mission is to highlight not only naturally curly styles, but also those looking to return to their natural styles.
The Armed Forces Natural Hair and Health Expo, which hosts multiple events each year in Killeen, received $167,721 from the Killeen Arts Commission this year. The money comes from the Killeen Hotel Occupancy Tax, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office. The tax is a 6% tax levied on all rooms and spaces within a hotel, including banquet halls and conference rooms.
