OSAGE CO., Okla. (KSWO) – The rights to the White Hare Memorial in Osage County have been signed from the Osage Nation to the Osage Nation, which will take over day-to-day operations at the site.
In 1984, the Burkhardt Trust acquired ownership of the property on the former home of Lily Morel Burkhardt. Burkhardt is a descendant of Chief Pawhuska (white hair).
The Burckhardt Trust was established pursuant to Lillie Burckhardt’s will.
After discussions and staff changes, the executive producers of the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) are honored to carry on Burkhardt’s legacy.
“OHS is honored to steward the Gray Hair Monument in accordance with Lily Burkhart’s wishes,” said Trait Thompson, executive director of the Oklahoma Historical Society. “Following recent staff changes, we have begun discussions with the Osage Nation about how best to operate the site in the future to serve our patrons. We are very proud to have reached an agreement with the Osage Nation that ensures it remains an important cultural destination for the county.”
The Burkhardt Trust, which includes nine members of the OHS Board of Directors, will provide scholarships to the Osage Nation as a way to help manage the site.
