Beauty brand leading healthy hair care system maintains commitment to future leaders with major donation to Spelman College and Howard University
ATLANTA, GA / ACCESSWIRE / October 3, 2024 / Atlanta-based Design Essentials, a Black-owned company that has been a leader in premium hair care for nearly 35 years, has donated $1 million to Spelman College in Atlanta to launch its cosmetics line. We are proud to donate dollars. Donated $1 million to Howard University in Washington, D.C., for science programs and to establish the Design Essentials Community Fund. As part of our continued commitment to consumers and future leaders, Design Essentials uses our expertise in healthy hair care practices for all hair types to inspire and give back to the next generation of leaders and innovators. I’m doing it. This pledge reflects the brand’s belief in philanthropy through donations and resources to local and international communities.
Design Essentials aims to make a meaningful impact through giving back initiatives focused on community enrichment, education, and mentorship while serving a network of professionals and consumers. By improving access to resources to advance the careers of Black women and men, the brand creates an inclusive and diverse space with premium, expert-backed products for textured hair. We continue to create.
Spelman College is a world leader in the education of women of African descent. This partnership will directly benefit Spelman’s Cosmetic Science program, which is the first major of its kind available at an HBCU (Historically Black College and University). Our innovative STEM program provides a culturally relevant approach that incorporates unique perspectives from Black women through research and practical knowledge of trends and innovations. Students will explore the use of cosmetics and personal care products, particularly in communities of African descent. This pledge influences innovative research and development of products, connects future chemists with core consumers, and enables efficacy and expression in the products they use.
Howard University is one of the leading research universities dedicated to educating students from diverse backgrounds. The launch of The Design Essentials Community Fund opens doors for Howard University Business School students who aspire to become entrepreneurs and business leaders. Cornell McBride Jr., president of McBride Research Laboratories and a Howard University alumnus, attributes the success of his flagship brand Design Essentials over the past 20 years to his business acumen. Students have access to business training programs including business pitch competitions, business plan advisory services, marketing and branding bootcamps, fundraising modules, and opportunities to learn about new software and technology.
“We are honored to support the future leaders of HBCUs at this moment in history,” said Cornell McBride Jr., president and CEO of the McBride Institute. A graduate of Howard University, McBride Jr. is dedicated to keeping Design Essentials’ heritage intact by supporting up-and-coming leaders in the business and beauty industries. “It has always been our mission to create quality products that meet hair styling needs, leave a mark on social impact initiatives, and develop individuals and scholars who advance inclusion in the beauty industry. Through our Cosmetic Science program, ongoing entrepreneurial mentorship and career opportunities, we are strengthening our commitment to education and ensuring that diverse voices are at the forefront of industry innovation.”
The Design Essentials pledge marks the beginning of a broader effort to support HBCUs at the national level and foster connections between multicultural hair care and consumers around the world. As a legacy brand, Design Essentials serves as a style partner, nurturing relationships with future leaders and brand fans to achieve styling success.
