There is little evidence to support taking prenatal vitamins to prevent postpartum hair loss. However, this does not diminish the importance of taking prenatal vitamins.
During pregnancy, the body has significantly different needs for various vitamins, minerals and trace elements. For example, the National Institutes of Health recommends taking folate during pregnancy because your body needs more of it. This vitamin is essential for the development of the fetal brain and spinal column.
Deficiencies in some nutrients are associated with poor hair health. In particular, it is common to experience decreased iron levels during pregnancy.
New moms may also be low on protein, especially if they’re breastfeeding. Vallecillos explains that this can have a direct impact on the health of your hair.
“Hair is primarily made up of proteins such as keratin, and requires a variety of vitamins and minerals to support its growth and maintenance,” he says.
He recommends getting adequate amounts of iron, zinc, B vitamins, and vitamin D for overall health.
If you’re not sure what to eat or which supplements to take before, during, or after pregnancy, talk to your doctor or registered dietitian.
