FAQ
What causes hair loss?
According to Levine, hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
Hormonal imbalances — e.g., as a result of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) Genetics Underlying medical conditions Side effects of certain medications — blood thinners, antifungals, beta blockers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, vitamins Medications to treat acne caused by AS Stress Nutritional deficiencies such as low iron levels
“Genetics, in particular, plays a big role in hair loss patterns,” Han says. “Genetic hair loss is progressive and will worsen over time if untreated. To optimize the chances of hair regrowth, it is important to reverse and/or treat the underlying medical problem. It’s important.”
Han also points out that hormonal changes are another common cause of hair loss, especially if assigned female at birth. This can occur as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause. For people assigned male at birth, this is usually associated with increased dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the hair follicles, Khanna says.
“The underlying hormonal changes that occur during these events are thought to play a role and may reveal a genetic predisposition underlying progressive hair loss in some people.” Professor Han explains. “For example, all people assigned male at birth have detectable levels of DHT. It may be related to the hair follicle’s sensitivity to DHT, which is caused by genetics.
How you treat hair loss depends on the cause of your hair loss. That’s why Boakye recommends seeing a dermatologist or trichologist who can help identify the root cause of your hair growth.
Is shampoo effective for hair growth?
“Shampoo works to cleanse the scalp and hair, thereby promoting hair growth,” says Boakye. “However, results will vary depending on individual hair type and continued use.”
If poor scalp health is the cause of hair thinning or hair loss, a hair growth shampoo can help. However, Boakye says that even the best shampoo for hair growth is less likely to be effective if there is an underlying reason for hair loss, such as genetics, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal imbalances.
“Shampoos formulated for hair loss or thinning can help delay these symptoms, but they cannot reverse the symptoms or actually regrow hair,” Han explains. I consider these to be complementary products that patients can add to their hair removal regimen (which usually includes prescription medications). ”
What is the difference between regular shampoo and hair growth shampoo?
“Regular shampoos are formulated to cleanse and remove dirt, sweat, and unwanted oil from your hair,” Boakye says.
Hair growth shampoos are unique because they contain specific ingredients known to promote scalp and hair health, Levin says. These ingredients are meant to prevent hair breakage and allow hair to grow longer, while nourishing the scalp and hair follicles to support growth.
“Shampoos formulated for hair removal should contain ingredients with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,” says Han. “Many shampoos formulated for hair loss may contain ingredients that help optimize scalp health, which is an important foundation for healthy hair follicles. If you have any symptoms, use these shampoos to help promote hair loss and create a healthy scalp environment. ”
How long does it take for hair growth shampoo to take effect?
Don’t expect to see the effects of hair growth shampoo right away. After all, healthy hair only grows about half an inch per month.
According to Levine and Khanna, it usually takes at least three to four months to see any effect on hair thickness or length. But Khanna says you may notice an improvement in your hair quality, such as shine, softness, and strength, after just a few weeks of using these shampoos.
