MILWAUKEE — When you walk through the doors of Adjusted Crowns in Milwaukee, you’ll be greeted with laughter and smiles.
Joshlyn Salton, CEO and founder of the business, told TMJ4’s Sydney Eure that she has a heart for helping people. Ms Salton said she created the adjustable crown to help those suffering from medical hair loss. This is a need she first discovered while working as a CNA and respiratory therapist.
“Most of my clients have alopecia or are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy,” Salton says.
After conducting research and earning two certifications in cranial prosthetics, Salton started building clients and changing lives.

Melissa Gilliam and Vivian Hunter are two of Salton’s clients. Gilliam suffers from alopecia, while Hunter came to Adjusted Crowns after surviving breast cancer.
“My hair loss is due to alopecia that has been going on since my 20s,” Gilliam said.

“In my case, it’s breast cancer,” Hunter said. “My hair fell out due to the effects of chemotherapy, and it never grew back.”
To qualify for the medical wigs offered by Salton, customers must obtain a prescription from a doctor. Once Gilliam and Hunter completed that step, they were able to reduce costs through Medicaid insurance.

After a series of consultations with Salton, they each received a customized medical wig.
“I didn’t feel judged. I didn’t feel embarrassed when I had to take off the wig I was wearing,” Gilliam said.
That sense of joy is what Salton strives to create.
“People come here crying. Sometimes they cry tears of joy,” Salton said. “Little girls come here saying, ‘I just want to look like the baby dolls I’m playing with.'”

“It feels great when you can find the right type of resource to help someone understand themselves and make them feel comfortable,” Gilliam added.
Salton said that’s why she hopes to never stop.
“When I get the wig, I write three things I like about it on sticky notes and walk it up and down the runway and just feel good,” Salton said. “The goal is to feel good, and that’s all you need.”
