To be honest, before I learned how to straighten my hair, I forgot about it. Before I was a teenager, I had an iron that went from wet to straight (remember those?). When I tightened my hair, steam spewed out and made a sizzling sound. At some point, I came to my senses and realized that frying my hair wasn’t the best course of action, especially for butt-length hair. I took a long break from the corrections game until recently.
The straight strand style is making a comeback, but who am I to ignore the latest hair trend? Fortunately, flat iron technology has undergone some significant upgrades over the past 15 years. I technically still use the wet-to-dry Dyson Air Straightener. But unlike my older version from middle school, which used scorching hot plates to dry hair, Dyson’s uses high-velocity air to achieve a healthier blow-dry and straighten. to dry and straighten at the same time.
To refresh my memory on how to straighten hair, I went straight to see a professional (just kidding). Celebrity stylists and hair care brand founders Rose, Mara Roszak and Garnier hairstylist Milly Morales reveal all their hair straightening tips and tricks. Read their advice and 5 expert-approved steps to straighten your hair.
Step 1: Start with clean hair.
Roszak advises washing with a “moisturizing, deeply cleansing shampoo and conditioner” first. Because “during cleansing, you can remove buildup and make your style last longer, and then the moisturizing ingredients help smooth and seal the cuticle.”
I wash my hair with 14th Night Nourishing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner, and then use a Nourishing Hair Mask just to be sure. Roszak’s pro tip: “Combining your conditioner in the shower and using a hair towel will eliminate frizz and remove a lot of excess water.”
Roszak says second-day hair is ideal because it’s completely dry. However, be careful not to leave any oil on the roots. “Ironing can accentuate it or make it look greasy. In this case, be careful to iron away from the roots, about an inch below the parting or hairline. ”And of course, you can always use a refreshing dry shampoo if you need it.

Step 2: Make sure your hair is completely dry.
“Make sure your hair is completely dry and detangled, then give it a good blow-dry first,” Morales recommends. To detangle, I use the K18 Leave-In Hair Mask (I’m pretty sure my hair is healthy thanks to the damage recovery formula). Next, as a heat protectant, RōZ recommends RōZ Santa Lucia Styling Oil. I’m a big fan of it too. Not only does it look gorgeous on your bathroom counter, it also makes your hair the smoothest. This is especially important when growing hair.
