Jodhpur: A 3kg chunk of hair was removed from a woman’s stomach during a surgery at Mathuradas Mathur Hospital in the city. Dr Dinesh Dutt Sharma from the Department of Surgery first examined a 28-year-old woman complaining of stomach pain and identified a hair mass in her stomach, which he surgically removed. Dr Sharma said the woman had been suffering from abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite and heavy stomach pain for the past three years.
Gastrologist Dr. Sunil Dadić performed an endoscopy and found a clump of hair in her stomach. In such a situation, it needed to be removed immediately, and in the end, a 3kg clump of hair was removed from the woman’s stomach through surgery. At the same time, medical history revealed that the woman had a habit of eating hair. She also has less hair on her head.
Also, during an endoscopy, a large amount of hair was seen in the stomach, due to which the patient did not feel hungry and vomited no matter what he ate. Apart from this, the patient’s weight was also rapidly decreasing. Despite all this, the most important thing is that the woman was completely healthy mentally.
In such a situation, the question is why did he eat the hair? Dr Sharma said the patient’s surgery was performed free of charge under the Prime Minister Ayushman Arogya Yojana. The team that performed the surgery included Dr. Paran Aseri, Dr. Vishal Yadav, Dr. Kunal Chitala, Dr. Akshay, and Dr. Shweta, while the anesthesia team included Dr. Geeta Singaria, Dr. Gayatri Tanwar, Dr. Rishabh, and Preksha. The doctors and nursing team included Dr. Rekha Panwar and Dr. Sumitra. Chaudhary and Rohini.
Dr. Dinesh Dutt Sharma and his team successfully completed this complex surgery. The trouble with this surgery was that there were so many strands of hair that it was very difficult to remove them through the small incision in the stomach. This clump of hair completely blocked the stomach and duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.
Know what trichophagia is:
Dr Dinesh Dutt Sharma said the patient had a disease called albinism. This causes the patient to develop the habit of eating hair. In this situation, hair begins to collect in the patient’s gastrointestinal tract, leading to the formation of hair strands in the stomach, which are called bezoars. The human digestive tract does not have the ability to digest hair, so it collects in large clumps. The disease generally affects women between the ages of 15 and 25, who are mentally weak, confused, and exhibit abnormal behavior.
