Recently, I realized how much I love my curly hair. It’s definitely been a journey, and I believe it’s an important part of my identity today. My curly hair was inherited from my mother and grandmother, so I feel like I always carry it with me. Growing up, very few of my friends had curly hair. I always brush my hair when it’s dry, which makes it frizzy and frizzy. I think it helped that I went to college as some of my friends had similar hair types. Over the years, I’ve found ways to style my hair better and love my curls.
It took me a long time to realize that the length of your hair affects the way your curls look. When I was young, I always had short hair, just like my mother. It was cute at the time, but it always ended up in an awkward stage and I was confused as to why my hair didn’t look as perfect as my mom’s. I lengthened it to make it feel more comfortable. I didn’t have curly hair like my mom, but I was starting to see long, flowing curls. It also helped that I started parting my hair down the middle instead of on the sides. I cringe every time I remember what I was like during that awkward stage, but I consider it a right to pass.
Finding the right hairdresser made the biggest difference. When I went to this hair salon for the first time, I was a little nervous because I had never had my hair dry cut before. I love the process and have been going to the same place ever since, so I’m glad I trusted it. I found a specific cut that worked best for me and have gotten the same one ever since. At one point I thought I might try shortening it again for a dramatic change. The hairdresser asked me, “Why?” I found what works best!’ I’ve been thinking about it ever since and sticking to what I know.
Devising the right routine and products can also make a big difference. Some products work better for me than others. Redken Curl Cream is not heavy on the hair, so I have been successful in using it. Even fancy shampoos don’t work for me. Don’t even get me started on how much money I spent on shampoo and conditioner because my hair gets greasy when it dries. It may look weird sometimes, but I wear a cotton shirt to dry my hair. This will help prevent frizz. If you have time, use a diffuser to completely dry your hair.
I wish I could have told my younger self that the awkward stage won’t last forever. Not having to constantly comb or straighten your hair. My curly hair is beautiful and makes me feel unique. It’s one of the many ways I feel connected to the people I love. I’m so glad I trusted the process and found what works best for my hair.
