FAQ
What causes thinning hair?
Yates says hair loss can have many underlying causes. Of course, you should always consult a dermatologist or doctor to uncover the root cause, but Yates shared some of the main causes. “Hormonal changes can disrupt the hair lifecycle, reducing growth cycles and extending resting cycles,” she explains. “As a result, the hair appears thinner and its condition is negatively affected.”
Yates also shared another surprising reason why hair loss occurs. She says aggressive dieting can cause your body to stop supporting functions it doesn’t need (like your hair follicles). The follicle then enters a resting phase, causing severe fallout with no new regrowth.
The final major reason for hair loss is, you guessed it, extreme stress. “Extreme stress, such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, or even illness, can also cause hair loss,” says Yates. Similar to aggressive dieting, stress can promote increased cortisol levels, causing the body to shut down hair follicles to support other more important functions. As a result, your hair will become thinner. In addition, local problems cannot be ruled out, such as clogged hair follicles due to daily washing, overuse of dry shampoo, and accumulation of styling products. All of these can lead to thinning hair if you’re not careful.
Are shampoos and conditioners for thinning hair really effective?
While there is no shampoo or conditioner to cure hair loss, there are options to support a healthy scalp. Yates says, “These can 100% create a better environment for hair to thrive and be healthier, promoting hair growth and a healthy scalp, which in turn can also help improve hair thinning.” states.
While you should definitely be wary of products that claim to completely stop hair loss, there are certain ingredients on the market that are best for thinning hair. I will explain below.
If you are suffering from thinning hair, what kind of shampoo and conditioner ingredients should you pay attention to?
Yates tends to favor natural ingredients in hair products designed to support those suffering from hair loss. Here are some important things she always suggests.
Aloe Vera: This natural ingredient soothes and instantly moisturizes the scalp, helping those suffering from dermatitis.
Tea Tree Oil: A medicated oil with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also acts as a perfect supplement to traditional dandruff treatments.
Peppermint oil: Reduces itching and revitalizes the scalp. Also ideal for aromatherapy.
Witch Hazel: A natural astringent that reduces irritation, supports proper hair follicle health, and reduces product build-up and excess sebum for scalp health.
Salicylic Acid: Gently exfoliates while maintaining moisture balance. It also helps support dandruff.
Rosemary Oil: Rosemary in oil form helps reduce inflammation and fight free radicals. Massaging rosemary blend directly into the skin/scalp can improve blood circulation, nourish hair follicles, and eliminate inflammation. By improving blood circulation, you can improve the growth phase of the hair cycle.
Bhringraj Oil: A natural herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. Contains antifungal and antibacterial ingredients to support ultimate scalp health. Good scalp health ensures that your hair follicles are in perfect condition and support hair growth. Bhringraj can actually “stain” your hair. When using on light strands of hair, do not leave it on for long periods of time. You should see some positive effects within 90 to 120 days. This is also a great supplement for anti-dandruff hair care.
