Jordan Spieth once opened up about a bad experience at a barbershop after a fan theorized about his new hairstyle at the 2018 British Open. Eagle-eyed golf viewers wondered if this fading American had undergone a hair transplant for his new look.
Spieth finished at 5 under in Scotland, placing him in ninth place on the overall leaderboard. Francesco Molinari became the British Open champion that year.
However, fans noticed that Spieth looked different than usual and wondered if he had hairline surgery. But the now 31-year-old has dismissed such suggestions, claiming he just had a bad experience at a local barbershop.
He revealed that he was given a shorter than normal grade on the side.
“I needed a haircut because my hair was getting a little long, so I got it cut this morning,” Spieth explained to the PGA Tour.
“It was meant to be what I always have, but instead he went a little shorter. It’s a very British hairstyle, a little cropped on the sides and a little longer on the top. That’s what it is. It’ll be fine in the summer.”
Even though Spieth still boasts a head of hair, he often jokes about his receding hairline. In 2015, he quipped that his partner (now wife Annie Verrett) had more hair than him.
Congratulating Verrett on her college career, she ended her Instagram post with the hashtag, “More hair than me.”
American comedian Larry David joked a year later that Spieth would be completely bald by the time he turned 25. “He’ll be very bald. This makes him even more attractive to me.
“It’s tough dealing with the pressure of the back nine at Augusta. Look what he does when he sees hair in the bathtub. That’s pressure. I’ll be watching him closely. He’s 22 years old. He’s got three, maybe four years left.
Spieth said in an interview with ESPN: Hey, there’s nothing you can do about it. ”
Most recently, the three-time major champion gave his thoughts on the possible merger of the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour. He noted that reaching an agreement will not be easy.
“You know, it’s not as simple as saying, ‘Hey, guys, let’s get together and figure this out in an hour,'” Spieth said. From the outside, it doesn’t seem like it’s anyone’s fault, but it just takes a little time. ”
