She and Fonda have spoken openly about embracing gray hair in recent years.
McDowell, 66, said she decided to grow out her natural hair during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I didn’t dye my hair… my roots were showing, and my daughters told me I looked good. The idea of looking good was really appealing to me,” McDowell said on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2021. “So I gave it a go, and I’m having fun.”
She added that when she changed jobs, she realized she could call herself a “silver fox.”
“The first time I did it, I went to the grocery store because I had nowhere to go and I thought it looked good,” she said, “and I saw a guy there, a ‘silver fox’ guy. He’s the kind of guy that when you sign up, you think, ‘Oh, he’s a silver fox.’ And I immediately pulled my shoulders back and I was like, ‘Me too.'”
Fonda also began embracing her gray hair a few years ago.
She debuted her icy gray pixie cut at the Oscars in February 2020, and has continued to sport chic silver hair ever since.
“I’m so glad I went gray,” Fonda told Ellen DeGeneres in 2021. “I’ve had enough of the time I wasted, the money I spent, the chemicals I used. I’m so sick of it.”
