Promethean Hair Lounge brings together curly hair professionals to donate their time
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Rachel Jenkins says curly and textured hair is a different skill set for a stylist, and Portland doesn’t have as many curl specialists as other cities its size, meaning curl experts in the Rose City are in high demand.
She and Denario Jenkins own Promethean Hair Lounge, located at the corner of NE 63rd and East Burnside, which specializes in curly and textured hair, and the two told KOIN 6 News they want everyone to have access to quality hair care.
In February of this year, they and a team of specialist curl stylists volunteered their time to provide free haircuts to children in financially disadvantaged circumstances – a success that was so well received they are set to do again on August 26th.

We still have openings on that day, and we also have stylist openings for those of you who are experts in curly hair and can spare the time.
“I think it’s important for people who can’t afford to get a haircut, for kids to get a haircut before they go to school,” Denario said.
When you walk into Promethean Hair Lounge, “it feels like a high-end salon. We want to make it more accessible, and this event is one way we do that,” she said.

She said curl stylists are often booked up six months in advance and don’t take children. “It’s really unusual for curl specialists to come together and offer a free service to children.”
They want the kids to be successful, and some of the people who come here have never been taught how to take care of their hair. Jenkins said Francis Uwekiah helped pay for the hair products the kids would take home.

Promethean Hair Lounge also has special privacy rooms for clients who wear hijabs or have sensory issues.
“What we do every day behind the chairs is really meaningful,” she says, “but having people experience it is where our heart lies.”
