Chapel Lawn is red now. The fiery Good Luck Babe singer/songwriter’s debut album soared up the charts and won Best New Artist at the recent MTV Music Awards. Anyone who’s ever heard of her will tell you she’s a vibe.
Roan exploded into culture with her bold looks, addictive 2000s-inspired synth-pop, f-yeah lyrics, and cross-life stage presence. And her fiery red mane ignited a global trend. Redheads (and those who want to be redheads), this is your moment.
For Marie Claire’s recent shoot, we asked professional stylist and colorist Amy Hirshan for her pro tips for recreating Roanne’s fiery red. It looks impressive, and Amy says it’s easy to do at home.
“You can absolutely create this look yourself,” she says. “Have you always wanted to go red? Then go for it. It’s hair, it grows, it washes out. You don’t have to worry about it interfering with your clothes. Clash is cool and courage is always sexy.”
we are confident! So here are Aimee’s tips for achieving salon-worthy color at home, as well as celebrity-inspired shades to add to your color hit list.
1. Choose high-quality colors
“Be bold!” says Amy. “The Clairol Professional Color Studio series has some great reds. I love these products because they make it easy to achieve a high-end professional look at home on a budget.”
This series is popular among professionals because it’s a three-step system that does more than just color. Inspired by salon systems, step one is a pre-color primer to protect the hair, step two is the color, and step three is aftercare with shampoo, conditioner and mask to keep the color vibrant for longer.

2. More (color) is more
If you have very thick or long hair, consider doubling up on the color for maximum coverage.
“Make sure you have enough product,” says Amy. “This may mean buying multiple boxes, but more is better than less.”
3. Watch the Clock
Follow the kit instructions to set the timer and stick to it.
“For true, bright color, leave the color on for the entire recommended amount of time,” says Amy. “Otherwise, it might look a little washed out and not be the nicest version you want.”
4. Be careful with your application
Apply a layer of petroleum jelly around your hairline to prevent stains and ensure even tint all the way to your hairline.
“When trimming your hairline and around your ears, be careful with your application,” suggests Aimee. “We don’t want to let go of a game that still has patchwork roots in order to be effortlessly cool.”
