Forget about eye-catching hair colors, because the colors everyone is coveting right now are firmly in girl-next-door territory. Along with fringed dresses and cowboy boots, the “mousy blonde” has exploded in popularity over the past year thanks to Taylor Swift, who also sang on her Ellas tour.
“There are young girls who come to see me and want to go for a more flattering, so-called ‘Mussa blonde’ look,” says Nicola, celebrity hair colorist and creative color director at John Frieda. Clark says. The ‘Taylor Swift Effect’ has increased the popularity of this shade.
What is Moussy Blonde?
Nicola defines ‘whimsical blonde’ as a compliment to blondes. It’s on the line between light brown and dark blonde, but “there’s a glow where the light shines through,” says Nicola. “There’s nothing that screams super blonde or super dark,” agrees Zoe Irwin, celebrity hairstylist and creative director at John Frieda. “It’s neutral,” she says.

Why choose a whimsical blonde?
Moussy blondes may not be fussy, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth attention. In fact, it’s a very smart shade. First of all, it goes with anything. “What made Taylor’s tour so successful was because her hair was so shaved and she was able to change outfits so many times,” Zoe explains. Her hair was a background tone that blended with and accentuated all of her different eras rather than clashing with them.
But as well as giving you versatility, it’s a super easy, non-draconian color shift to adopt for fall, especially if you want to go back to bright blonde for fall (more on that later).
